Subject: 100th thread made! Also, how cool were 90's beat 'em ups?
Just got a Sega 80 in 1 console for Xmas that also plays cartridges. After replaying Streets of Rage as well as ordering X-men and Maximum Carnage, I remembered my love for 90's beat 'em ups. It was a simple time, with rounded, strong/slow, and fast/weak characters. The jump kick was king and life was good. Anyone else have fond memories of these great games?
One of my fave games of all time is Streets of Rage 2. Got to play it again on the Megadrive Classics compilation for PS3, it's amazing how well it has stood up to the test of time. Certainly, compared to a lot of other side-scrolling beat-em-ups (that D&D game, even Streets of Rage 3 etc.)
Remember playing the Simpsons and TMNT side scrollers in arcades when I was a kid, good memories!

Heck yeah! It's too expensive to get, but I really want a BattleToads cartridge. BattleToads was and still is one of my favorite games.

I liked SOR 1 way better than the others, even though they had better graphics and more moves and gak. I don't actually know why either, I think the more chunky characters didn't move as well.
I liked Blaze the best on SOR1, her backwards throw was fething ridiculous as she catapulted her foes 40 feet through the air. The soundtrack was also exceptionally mint to my naive 10 year old ears.
I really liked that old Killer Instinct one on my N64 too, and of course, Street Fighter 2 on the Snes, which made the Genesis version look utterly appalling by comparison.
We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Although it was released in 1989, I loved Final Fight. Named my son after one of the characters too, Cody.
The Alien vs. Predator beat 'em up was great. Loved playing that with friends. I am a little surprised that nobody has mentioned the D&D arcade games too. I loved playing that with three other friends!

Been playing a lot of SOR recently, as I just purchased the SEGA Drive Collection. And it's still fething great, especially two player. Never did like Final Fight much, but I was always a Sega fan boy. I loved the first Soul Calibre game I bought on my old Sega Dreamcast, especially the little recreation of your character on the VMU.
I also have fond memories of long summer evenings playing Tekken on my mates PlayStation. Good times

A friend and I played through Double Dragon on the SNES a few times. I always wished we could take the swords from the double-sword guys. Didn't seem fair that we had to leave 'em behind.
Remember playing the original of that on the NES! Think it was awesome at the time, and must have been the best arcade conversion (of course, you could never match the arcades back in those days, just the sounds and the impact of them - and the graphics were of course better)
One of the first games I ever owned on my original 386 was a PC version of Double Dragon. Never made it past the 2nd level (and often never made it to that).
Reading this has reminded me of some quality old SNES games, does anybody remember that Ninja Turtles beat em up?
Not the sideways scrolling beat'em up where the building is on fire on the first level, but a proper one on one fighter?
I don't recall the name, but it came out around the time SF2 was the biggest game ever and I was pleasant surprised to find it was actually excellent.
All I remember is I liked Donatello and when his powerbar was full he used to throw a big fething dragon at people.

Altered Beasts, and the awesome RPG Side Scrolling Beat em Up- River City Ransom. Eat the Eggroll, baby!
This genre is awesome and fun. I adore it for mindless, reactive carnage.

I loved this game, but it was hard as hell.
Now it's funny, but I'm old enough to remember playing that in arcades and thinking 'hmmm, odd choice' when Sega chose to package that in with the Megadrive when it was first released (was it the same in the US with the Genesis?) - think there were a lot of better games out there, but I guess it was probably a chance for Sega to show off their arcade/console crossover.
Have to be honest I wasn't a fan, played it on a retro compilation disk recently and it hasn't aged well at all! Playing as the bear with its useless spin attack is absolutely hilarious.

My brother in law got me this weird fething.. wireless Genesis thing with 80 games for Christmas and Ive been playing Altered Beast, its actually pretty gak now though. The first level is good, but after that its like an acid fueled trip into nightmare, the Dragon is crazy OP, the bear has a bizarre "stick your arse out and blow bubblegum" attack followed by the "curl up in a ball and jump to your death" move, and the last level is the exact same as the first.
The Tiger is pretty good as well mind.
The best games, cos I spent a few hours on it last night, are Golden Axe, (The OP dwarf is apparently called Gilius Thuderhead?!) Streets of Rage, the first Sonic the Hedgehog, and ESWAT seems pretty good but it is nigh on impossible even on easy.
I also played a cool game I had never even heard of before called "Chakan" about some fething mental ninja bloke who has a fight with Death and then spends a thousand years fighting Gods.
From a fantasy perspective I think its the most promising, but I spent 30 minutes falling off cliffs and turned it off in anger.
I don't know if its just because I am an old fether but they all seem really difficult to me. The second level of Alex Kidd made me want to boot the fething thing all over my living room and then cry tears of frustration and rage in a cold shower.

This is what my brother got me! Check out Shadow Dancer and Shinobi III, pretty good games. SoR 3 is probably my favorite, although I will have to go back to SoR 1. Also yeah, don't blame yourself. Games were made hard as hell to give people their money's worth

I strongly recommend using a "high definition graphics" model 1 Genesis (and use the headphone jack for stereo out). Those AtGames products are garbage, and the one with "80 games" really only has 40 on it. Even for people who don't want all the cartridges (or the expense of some of the harder to get stuff), they can spend a little money and get a Mega Everdrive. Having the original hardware is worth it, especially when you hook it up to a good subwoofer.

Interestingly, there was a snippet in the latest Total Film magazine (UK) that said apparently two classic 16-bit games are currently being proposed for movie versions, namely Altered Beast and Streets of Rage!
Will be interesting to see if anything comes out of it..
