I've been a Necron player for a while now, but only just obtained 6 Destroyers. I'm very keen to run them in a list but for 40 points each and their stats I'm a little unsure about why people would take them in general.
What do they generally do better than anything else? Are they best running off on their own, using them as bodyguards or just keeping them in a gun line?

Their mobility allows for flying around at max range. Pretty useful for maelstorm. Something like a smaller easier to hide barge with worse survivability and damage output.

At the moment I think their best use might be to wait in a box for the new Codex.
I think they are a bit too expensive for what they do.

Hold them in deep strike reserves and stand by to drop them next to 3+ save type models.

The only thing I have had them do effectively since the codex changed is being a really expensive distraction. People tend to shoot at them because the look dangerous, I guess, and sometimes they will keep thinking they're a threat even after the destroyers shoot back.

The ability to take a minimum unit size of one in very small points games can be surprisingly good.

For tactical objectives? Sure. Not what I was talking about though.
The guns on a Tomb Blade are too weak to decide much even in a tiny game. It's the difference between an Immortal on a Jetbike and an Immortal with two AP3 shots and prefereed enemy on a Jump Pack.

Tomb Blades do Maelstrom objective grabbing better.
Destroyers do harassment better.
