It's very dependent on the context. Many times, my closer circle of friends will come up with scenarios or special games that probably fall under the umbrella of "irregular" but at the same time, if I'm just going down for a pickup game, I rarely if ever ask for anything beyond the usual.

By irregular I mean forgoing the general rules for choosing a battle to play something else, for example playing 'Regiments of Renown', Boarder Patrol, Warhammer Skirmish, or one of the special narrative scenarios from the big rule book (or anything else).
Post away!
Right now, just this side of never. Starting in 2015 ? we're going to do this more often. My best friend and I are in the beginning stages of planning an apocalypse style "Collection vs. Collection" battle of Elves vs. Rats, with the smaller collection getting robust reinforcement type rules.
I think more varied play like this is going to more frequent for my playgroup and I into 2015.

I think (in my extremely limited experience) that I prefer irregular games. I mean, I have two opponents: an old family friend, and my dad. It's very informal, and we've made up our own little scenarions and backgrounds for the games we've played.

That would be everytime, if I were to choose. But it depends on the playmate.

I've had one irregular game, in which I took 8 monsters and no magic.

Not often enough, sadly.
I had a game of Triumph and Treachery the week before Christmas and it reminded me how much I love that fun, quirky expansion.
I think I get too caught up in "normal games", refining lists and tactics and trying out new stuff to see what works. It's a refreshing change to just sit back and have a go at some wacky scenario that someone's dreamed up.

Every game is a scenario, odd points, sometimes no points. Much better than line up and fight gaming.

Does Mordheim count?
Also, the best scenario I've played was that one from 6th, with 7 bretonnian knights that had to prevent an army of goblins from crossing a river.

Pretty rarely.
My group has played a couple of siege games, but generally speaking it's mostly points matches. We usually keep scenarios for bigger events.
|
Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Considering the events of the End Times stuff, I'm calling foreshadowing.

I have played a game from the triumph and treachery expansion, and one from the siege expansion. Both are jostling for my top game ever played.

Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Pretty much every time i play fantasy now. very (very) few people in my community so its very casual. We do ET plus house rules. We made our own rules for joined profiles and its pretty amazing. What really gets me really excited these days are the 5000 point games we do sometimes ( I get one about once a month). They arnt strictly end times but we did try out the new magic system last time.
We had a pretty "normal" game last week but I took Malekith in a HE army. I didnt use the rest of the aotEK rules because its lots of powuh for no additional points. I had a 1000 point model running around in a (3k) game which comes with its own inherent checks and balances. In that same game we tried a new house rule (+1 to hit modifier for shooting if your in short range.)
The normal of today is not the normal of yesterday.
In my next HE list I will be proxy-ing some DE core choices (plus DE mage with sac daggger), I will be using the aotEK technically but will keep the HE and DE special rules seperate. (martial/ murderous). Being able to take awesome op DE core will be bananas. ALL of my units will do stuff....
