I know it had dwindled down to just a few posts a day from it's former glory but seems the site shut down about a month ago due to a "technical" issue and hasn't been back up since.

I guess it's time for Lego to do another status thread showing how the various 40k and wargaming fora are doing these days. Last one was from 18 months ago:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/537259.page
Even back then 40k online was showing a downward trend, but nothing like the complete meltdown of Tau Online.
Interestingly, though, when I searched for 40k online forum just now, I found no mention of 40k Online itself. 40k Forums was the top result. Tau Online was the fourth result and Dakka was number 5. On Google, Dakka was the ninth result with a link to this thread.

The mods after awhile where very quick to come down any thread that got out of line. They also seemed to have a lot of rules which lead to a lot of threads getting locked. The mods were also very quick to move stuff around I saw. If your thread was even remotely off topic from the topic for the section of the forum you where under they would move it to a different section.
What that meant sometimes though was after awhile they would move threads to sections of the forums that completely empty, with the last thread from over a month ago with some guy asking a question and no one responding. So near the end of my time there, in the parts of the forum that did have activity you couldn't talk about various topics otherwise your thread would be sent into dead areas of the forum like warhammer fanasty section, and you would likely get no more responses.
The main reason though I left that forums several years ago for dakka and others was due to all of the technical issues the site kept having. The guy you runs the server seems to be on his own or something. One time he was out of town or something and the forum went down and it was several days before he posted a message saying he was working on it. The site also lagged a lot, and at one point the guy who runs it tried politely asking people to delete all of their old messages as they were slowing down the server.

What happened to Tau Online? I don't think I've been there since end of 5th edition, IIRC.

I got banned from there and all it said was "you know why" which I didn't. I had a "FU" to a mod in my sig in the forum I went to (a haven for Heretics) and that mod joined it just to harass me there. They told him to leave! Lol

In 2010 the site owner added some ads and changed the site around. The mods tried to get him to change things and then he banned them all. Umoderated, the place filled with porn and traffic dropped off of a cliff. The mods started Second Sphere, but it never really got going. Most migrated elsewhere.

I have it bookmarked and here is what pops up when I try to go to the site now.
Sorry, there was a fairly major issue with the site, discovered Sunday night. I am working to get it running again - please be patient. --Kindred
Kindred is/was the site admin. I just wonder if he finally shut it down for good after the last glitch.

Out of interest, did they start getting ban-happy before or after GW started coming down like a sack of potatoes on fan sites?
I know a number of forums that changed during that time, and started crapping themselves at the prospect of receiving a 'polite notice' telling them that there website would have to close or they would face legal action. Suddenly, in those places discussion was curtailed (especially anything that could be deemed as criticism), even posting of pictures of leaked material and discussion of rumours.
I actually wonder if Warseer now still operates under that MO due to GW's policy towards forums, last few times I went there it's remarkable how the atmosphere has changed compared to years ago.

I am positive that the rules for 40k online were very strict about things like posting point values and especially any link to leaked material was quickly taken down, I remember a mod warning me when posted something there that I had seen linked on dakka. They tried to play nice with GW. However I don't remember if it was just always that way or if it got any worse when all that happened.

Well, I've been a long term member of 40k online.
When I started war gaming with DE, I joined EldarOnline about 12 years ago.
It was a great place for Eldar kin players with inspiring persons at that time.
I remember the Harlie codex of Rasmus and an Incubi codex.
The community grew and was renamed to 40k online after lots of 40k players joined the site.
At that time Dakka was merely a joke.
I browsed the site several times and only saw Sazzlefrats as recognizable person there.
Things changed, Dakka grew and 40k online failed losing more and more members.
Blood Hawk summarized it. Not sure if there were other reasons.
I left the site a few years ago.

To anyone that wants to stay updated on the status of 40konline.com, you can follow the guy trying to fix it on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/40KOnline.
It looks like there was some Malware advertisements that got inserted into the site, and it's taking him awhile to fix it. Last time he said anything was that he was going to try and migrate the forum to a different server.
