Some of the FW dragon models take up a gigantic amount of table space. Are they actually gamed with or are they just collectors pieces? If they are gamed with, how do you take the base size into account? Thanks.

Not a very popular question? :-) Does that mean you guys don't game with the FW dragons (or the heresy dragon, etc)?

In actuality, the huge Forge World dragon is the intended model for the Great Fire Dragon from Lore of Beasts.

That said, when they show up, it is for really huge or unusual games, not for day to day casual play given the size and scope. Base-wise, you use the big beast, you gotta pay the price for it in terms of base size.

I also use the Forge World Carmine Dragon (much smaller) for my End Times Malekith dragon.

I'm getting the heresy dragon myself, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do with it other than set it on a shelf. I'd thought of perching an elf on it's back but just don't relish the idea of humping it around to gaming venues, heaving it across the table, and all while worrying about pointy bits pinging off.

If you're conducting a bit of market research, I'm probably not the one to say what's ultrapopular right now. But I do think the smaller dragons like ye olde Grenadier dragons of the month and Julie Guthrie's series are a good size for 28mm gaming (though 'smaller' is relative) and I think it's a little unfair that bigger and bigger (but not always flashier) dragon minis seem to get most publicity these days.

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

Well in my game circles people like to use the FW dragon. The size doesn't matter, because once that monster is on the battlefield, all objectives are forgotten and you only focus on killing it or die by its wrath.

It is fun to play against it, but usually your opponent let's you know if he is using it. Ihave defeated it three times, twice by magic once in battle. Our battles are between 3000 - 10000 pts.
It is cool. And the dragons are like the greater deamons superpowers, so they are always a gamechanger.

Hive Garuda - 1000 PL Tyranids
Hive Fleet Garuda - BFG 15.000 pts Tyranids
Iron Warriors - 1700 PL Chaos Space Marines
Bad Moon gobbos - 10.000 pts Nightgoblins Skarsnik
Rusty Shards Tribe - 10.000 pts. Goblins
Blue skin tribe - 10.000 Orcs pts Fantasy
Xor - Nemesis of Cathay - 30.000 pts Warriors of Chaos

I use the Magma Dragon with my Chaos Dwarfs as a Rare choice. However our regular games are 4k.

Orks! ~28000
Chaos Dwarfs ~9000
Slaanesh ~14700

Sadly, the reason that FW's "Warhammer Forge" division went on indefinite hiatus is in part because they dedicated themselves to creating gorgeous models that nobody ever uses.

Storm of magic is cool, but not as fun as "standard" warhammer. Though certain tournaments specifically try and encourage people to bring big forgeworld monsters, outside of those sorts of homebrew efforts there's really no ability to take them in a standard game. Some of them are also utter trash, while yet others are nigh unstoppable.

The monsters that actually get use are the ones that people either use for conversions or can somehow incorporate into standard play. The Carmine Dragon is frequently used in conversions to make "standard" dragons. Some of the smaller monsters are used as mounts. Plague toads are frequently used as beasts of nurgle (since they're as expensive as the GW variety). I've seen magma dragons used as K'daii destroyers before. Giant squigs are manglers, while squigg gobbas are doom divas / spear chukkas. And of course the models that have obvious uses (VC wight banner bearer, the whole chaos dwarf line, various command models, etc).

...most of the other ones though just kind of sit on people's shelves and look pretty. Occasionally they'll get tabletop play in a friendly game, but that's about it.

Whether they actually achieved the creation of gorgeous models, though, is highly debatable.

My heresy dragon actually arrived this morning. Despite seeing the completed model at Salute a couple of times, and liking the thing a lot (heck, if you know about the kind of patience and trust needed after the production problems and waiting times with it...) when I started fishing the huge parts out of the box of styrene peanuts I got that feeling of 'where am I gonna put it?' again.

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

The really huge models sometimes were daunting when i would think about storage and transport.... but dammit... i wish Warhammer Forge had persisted for longer. I love what they did with the K'daai destroyer, and totally would have bought 2 of those. I might get more infernal guard, but frankly, i can buy the new plastic dwarf iron breakers / fire drakes, and convert them ever so slightly and basically get the same thing without the absurd shipping fee.

As it is now i have a couple McFarlane action figures converted up slightly to act as destroyers until i figure something else out.

I can sympathise -- waaay back in the 90s I got a huge bonus at a job and decided to splurge with a small bit of it on a Kaiyodo "big guy" godzilla. I've moved three times since then and it follows me around in the huge boxes from place to place. It's in my basement now, still in kit form (assuming that the mice have not made tunnels in it over the decade and a half it's been there).

Here's an image of it -- it's the 1989 incarnation, from the really terrible film Godzilla vs. Biollante -- my favorite G version (although I also really like the one in the recent American film):
