Subject: Is Warhammer: Nagash needed to play Undead Legions?

First off, not entirely sure if this was the right place to post it, but it seemed like a better choice than Army Lists.
I've only briefly skimmed through the Undead Legions rule book, but the Army Special Rules section seems to just be a re-listing of the special rules in the TK/VC books (Minus Nehekaran Undead and the need for a general). Is anything in the book absolutely NECESSARY to play undead legions (Aside from the part where it tells you what you can take and the rules for Nagash/monarchs, of course)? I'd still need to buy the army books for both VC and TK, so spending an extra $72 on top of that $80 would be a bit too much for just one army, IMO.

Yes,you need it for the Lore of Undead spells listed in there and for the special character stats(if you want to use any).
I suppose you could get the spell descriptions off the web somewere but due to the lore being rather powerfull Its probably safe to say that you really should have the book when you are using it..im sure theres opponents that would have a problem with it otherwise.
I started an UL army from scratch as well and have been playing them now and then, its fun!..I really like summoning and the spell lore works real good with my OnG`s too.
Now I just need to get my Nagash and a few other models built so I can throw him down.

I've made cards for the spells, and Nagash (Possibly his monarchs as well) have their rules at the back of the instruction manual

I'd say yes. There are special rules that apply to an undead legions list that do not aplpy to a TK &/or VC list.
These rules are army special rules & not listed in the army section or on the model stats in the boxes.

There's a two-page spread with the amended armywide special rules and list of units from each book that you can bring. You will need at least a printout/photocopy of these pages if you wish to play UL without the book.
You'll also, of course, need the printout for any morghasts / mortarch / etc. that you bring from the books.
From a courtesy point of view, I think it's also important to own the book. People are somewhat hostile towards the legions lists, and ET content in general, and I feel like actually shelling out for the book seems to placate folks. Same as actually having Tamurkhan on the table when you're running Chaos Dwarfs.

Hold on a minute, so you're suggesting that in addition to buying the rules and the army books we also have to buy the End Times trilogy / quadlogy / quintlogy at $many a time?
It's getting to be an expensive hobby, when you think they may be obsolete by the middle of the year!

No he is suggesting in addition to buying the rules and army book, if you want to field an end times army you also need that end times book. You don't need all 3 (Soon to be 4) if you want undead legions, you just need 1, chaos legions & you need book II (not 1 or 3)
Or you could just decided to play pure VC or pure TK and not buy it.
I wouldn;t expect an eternity king player to have nagash & glottkin but I would expect him to have Khaine as well as the army boos he took units from. This is an expensive hobby, but nobody is forcing you to take a combined list, your old one is still valid.

$80 is a drop in the bucket for undead. If you're worried about the $152 bucks of rules, how are you going to shell out the ~$900 for the decent army?

Except doesn't Khaine have the end times spells for all the lores? So you do need that one in addition to at least one of the others, whether you play elves or not.

That'd be why I need the extra $80, to afford the thousand zombies I'm going to need.
