Gurus,
My buddy has hit on what I think is a top tier list for the LVO. I'm not going to detail his list because it's pretty good. Top table good. I have no answer for it. I am 0-6 games in our practice. I am consistently tabled on or before T4. I have the following armies painted. I'd prefer to not to use Taudar.

9000 Orks
2000 Tau
2000 Salamander
2000 Eldar
1800 Necron
1200 Dark Eldar (Mostly Unpainted)

My lists so far have included a Stompa w Riptides. I'm an OK player but, Orks are just a frakking fail. I'm so pissed at GW for the bend over... but thats another story. Now I'm thinking pure Tau. Triptide with 2x3 Broadside (Rail guns). Lots of marker support. Ideas?

You need to build an all comers list.
Pure Tau is a viable option.

Armies: Eldar, Necrons, Blood Angels, Grey Knights; World Eaters (30k); Bloodbound; Cryx, Circle, Cyriss

Thanks wusten.... you're like the old wizard that speaks in riddles! 16000 posts? I guess my cryptic request justifies an equally cryptic and telegraphic response. But on the bright side I was thinking Tau. I've gotta scrap the green skins. Just can't seem to mske it happen. Perhaps in more skilled hands they can work.

If you're going to run triptide + 2x3 broadsides, you might as well run the Tau Cadre Firebase formation. Spam Adam ran it at the BAO 2014 and did very well with them, finishing 4th Overall. It basically consists of 1 riptide and 2x3 broadsides, all with Prefered Enemy Space Marines (I think) and Tankhunter. That could actually be very useful againt knights.

Just make sure you include markerlights in your army. They need it to function properly.

So from your cryptic post I'm guessing the list is something like:
Adamantine Lance + 3 x 5 dire avengers in waveserpents + naked autarch? (or 2 and a naked wraith knight?)

If you are taking a predominantely ranged force, I'd consider bringing an ally of a Cerastus Knight as a countercharge threat. He has initiative 5 on the charge and with 5 Strength D attacks he should be able to punch out another knight before it can even attack.

I also like the idea of units of 5 fire dragons in waveserpents against knights, if you can move and disembark into the side arc of a knight then you can wait for him to pick a direction for his shields and then battle focus into the other arc to avoid the crazy 4++.

Alternatively you could go with necron AV13 wall and pack enough Haywire to sink the knights.

@wtnind: His list has 2 imperial knights. No serpents. +/- 1 wraithknight.

@jy2: Would Tankhunters help vs Imperial Knights? I have a buffing bodyguard with pure tide for deep striking fusionblasters. Re: the other 40k tactics thread, I would love to play a mirror match (where you and I switch lists) so you can give me pointers on the green skins. But unless I'm unfamiliar with your list, I think you'd be seriously hobbled. Even though you are a superior player.

I wouldn't be that worried about the knights then, the Adminatite lance with its rerollable 4++ shields is the worst. Shouldn't be too hard for a dedicated shooty army to deal with.

Take a fast mobile army and get around his flanks, and make him think about where he's going to put his shields.
