I have been told that sergeants get mastercrafting with this rule - is this true?

Dies this mean that this would apply to other such characters like apothecarys?

Everyone gets it. if using a melta flamer or thunderhammer.

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.

What does the rule say? It helps to get an answer if you post the text of the rules and point out which part is confusing.

It sounds like you (or the person who told you this) is confusing Vulkan's rules with the general Salamander's chapter tactics.

It's the chapter tactics that allows master crafting on characters (one weapon of the player's choice on each character). If the apothecary is flagged as a character in their army list entry they may benefit.

Whoops - sorry, I do mean Salamander mastercrafting - I will attempt to change the subject of this question.

The rule is each character can make 1 weapon MC - my question is ultimately what is a character?

How is someone flagged as a character - is this something I have to assign at the beginning of games?

I apologise if this is an stupid question but I have only been playing 40k for a couple of months and it is better to be stupid if front of anonymous people on the internet rather then face to face with your mates...

They're a 'character' if their unit type says it's a character.

Ghaz is correct. If you own a codex you'd see that each entry for a unit is labeled, a flyer, tank, infantry and so forth.

Some units have the character label on top of their "type" of unit
