I know battlements and walls give 4+ but what do the building themselves give for cover?

If the building is difficult terrain it is a 5+

otherwise you need to check the terrain datasheet. (Or talk it over with your opponent before the game if no cover save value is listed).

Im talking buildings like a bastion

But yeah I didn't find anything about what cover they give so i guess its just 5+.

In the rule book, GW gives a 4+ save to most of it's terrain so I could see a bastion being that.

Have you tried looking in Stronghold Assault? I think bastions have an entry in there.(I don't have the book to look)

None of the building entries in stronghold assault say what cover that building gives

Being inside a building blocks line of sight, generally.

I'm not talking about being in the building. I'm talking about being obscured by the building, for vehicles and such.

Well, if there's no entirely official answer I'd like to see someone sucessfully argue 25% obscurement from an intact building should be worse than 25% ruin obscurement...

Small Rulebook, Page 110 - Buildings Section - "Buildings of all types use aspects of the Transport vehicle rules. The main difference between buildings and actual vehicles is that they can't move, they can be controlled by either side and units from either side can embark upon them."

Presumably we follow the same rules we would if a Transport Vehicle was partially blocking line of sight.

Small Rulebook, Page 37 - Cover Saves Section - "If, when you come to allocate a Wound, the target's body (as defined on page 14) is at least 25% obscured from the point of view of at least one firer, Wounds allocated to that model receive a cover save. Unless specifically stated otherwise, all cover provides a 5+ save."

So...

For a regular building without special rules dealing with granting fancy cover saves (and I can't think of any that do that), you'd need to be 25% obscured to get a 5+ cover save. Anything less than 25% and you get no cover. Bascially, it's the same situation as if you were standing partly behind a Rhino.

If you can hide the vehicle out of line of sight completely that will prevent most shooting outright.

If the opponent can draw line of sight then it gets the 5+ cover save for being >25% in cover.

Oddly if the Bastion were wrecked it would then grant a 4+ cover save to models behind it.

Players however can agree before the game to bestow whatever cover save they want on a Bastion. 4+ seems logically consistent.

I agree. To avoid confusion, I usually go over the terrain/buildings on the table and make sure everyone agrees on what cover gives what before we start.
