Subject: Small Model/Troop Cases - Ideal For Travel

Hi all,
I work offshore and travel a lot, I'm looking for a good quality smaller replacement for my standard GW carry case as it's far too large to take away with me.
Ideally I'll be taking 1 or 2 squads of 10/12 and some paints as I know my models would actually get some attention whilst I'm away!
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks!

I'd suggest a Pelican locking case with some pluck foam from one of the case manufacturers.
Those things take a beating, and will float

Sabol Platoon. It's about the size of large lunch pail (i'm talking like a construction site lunch pail), has a shoulder strap, two pockets and mesh back. Best of all ... its small enough to be a carry on bag no problem at all, and fits under all the airline seats i've ever taken it on. http://www.saboldesigns.net/platoon.html
Barring that, if you need a slimmer profile, i'd go with a pistol case personally.

Off the top of my head:
Reaper sells a small hard plastic Carry Case with Egg Foam to transport mini's and paints.
If thows are too small the Chessex figure cases are another nice hard figure case, that has a thinner profile then the GW case well still having a good capacity.
If you don't mind spending more on a case, Battlefoam has a range of bags that might be of interest you to you. The Pack Mini, Pack C4, and Pack Air would be the bags that would suit your needs the best. Just remember that only the bags in their Premier Storage are actully have the hard lineing. The shield bags in their Economy Storage well cheaper have are soft and have no hard lining like their other bags. Since you travel alot I assume that this would not be a good option for you.
KR Multicase would be another good option to check out, some of the aluminum cases in their "skirmish" line sound like they might fit your needs also.

If you are only transporting a few models there is always the option of a pistol case. I use one for transporting battletech minis as I typically only need 4 to 12 figures. I got mine from a sporting goods store for just under $10 CDN. hard plastic case, with egg crate style foam inside. off the top of my head its probably 30cmx20cmx10cm deep.

He lives in the Netherlands, I don't think pistol cases are as common as they are in North America.
=S
If I'm off the mark, then so be it. But not sure how easy it would be for the op to get one.

I'm a huge fan of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Feldherr-Mini-Monster-Tanks-Figure/dp/B008VO7PXW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1420469834&sr=8-3&keywords=feldherr
They're really well put together, and the foam is a little softer than the battlefoam I have. They're on sale occasionally on Amazon, which is how I've picked them up in the past. They're also German, so you may be able to get them fairly easily in the Netherlands.
Depending on how small you want to go, I also love these:
http://us.battlefoam.com/mini-p-a-c-k-mini-standard-load-out/
I have 3 of them (1 is exclusively for tools) and I use them more than any other bags I have. They fit in a backpack easily, and I'll often take two with me if I want to build/paint on the go.

I second the Battlefoam suggestion. For the single reason that there is a set of foam inserts made for paint pots, which will also accomodate most minis without too much rattling. It is slim, durable and has both the handle and shoulder strap.

I just realized he said he was flying. Most airlines don't let you take liquids on planes as carry on anymore I thought. So any case he puts his paints into he can't take as a carry on.
Two very small cases, one with paints and hobby tools to put in his luggage and a small case with his minis he can take as carry on might be his best choice actually.
Speaking from experience when I say never take your minis as luggage, and never try and transport large figures and hallow tanks. To many horror stories.
Know a guy who had a us customer agent smash his forge world keeper of secrets in front on him in a airport.

Pistol cases are a great idea, but have the issue that everyone thinks you're carrying on a pistol!
I bought a large insulated (for extra padding) lunch container and put in a couple of plastic containers. One has foam to hold models secure. The other is paints. Add a small pencil case for tools and brushes and you're good to go.. Works great for when I want to take a unit or two on a trip where I know I'll have time to paint. I've done this several times.

Thanks very much! I have checked these out the Feldherr 'MINI' and it does look great. I grabbed myself a 32 minature 'MINI' case, should fit well in the main luggage bag!

Looks like the OP has made his decision, but I second the idea of a pistol case. A 1 or 2 pistol case is a great way to transport a couple units of minis in a package that can easily be stored in a backpack or other bit of lugage. If your minis are oddly shaped, you can always tear away a bit of the eggshell to make room. They can easily be found online from many suppliers
Unless you really love the sticker that Reaper puts on the side, there's no reason to buy the Reaper case. It's the same product as a pistol case, but costs about 2-3 times as much.
Look Familar?

for $5
Vs
for $16
In the $6-10 range there are some nice cases that are considerably larger and at the $12 point, there's the 4 pistol (2 layer) case that I use for most of my minis.

Though I do modify the foam to make it into trays.
