Subject: Expanding on IoB?

Looking to expand on my IoB set soon. What should I get? I only have wha came in the box, so what would be some good, playable additions to both sides?
I was thinking some more Sea Guard for the elves, maybe the Noble and BsB set?
For the Skavens, maybe a box of Clanrats to bring both units up to 30, and maybe some proper artillery?
What say you?
Also looking at a box of Glade Guard to use as Archers because, let's face it, High Elf Archers are ugly!

I would defiantly try to get some more Sea Guard as the have spears and bows, although you can only really get them in the IOB set so you may need to look elsewhere (Ebay for example). You may want to also get a Bolt Thrower in there as well as it provides the best shooting ever. As for Skaven, just keep spamming those clanrats on there! Sheer numbers will normally win over the toughest units. Maybe also get a Doomwheel/Warp Lightning cannon as these are the Skaven WMD. Hope this helps

GW sells the Sea Guard 5 for $20 on the website, probably the best way to get them if you already have IoB. This is probably what I'll do, to fill out my core unit better. And Clanrats are probably a better choice, but those storm vermin look so cool! Oh well, still need core choices, not like in 40k where you need the troop tax!

If you can find inexpensive Sword Masters more of them are always good. I'd also suggest a Bolt Thrower, it's an invaluable tool against big tough things you don't want to get close enough to squash you. (Try picking a fight with Mindrazored High Elf Spearmen and then tell me Core is a tax...)

Lol, I was referring to the bad habit of thinking of troops as tax in 40k. It seems like my tac squads always flounder, whereas something like say... Clanrats, always seems to work well.
I do really like the bolt throwers, that does sound like a good idea. Added bonus? No misfire chart!

Yeah, Core are awesome most of the time.
Some armies or particular builds just go for minimum, but those aren't as common.

Also, I had a great idea the other day.
Chracian Lions as unit filler. Don't they come in the tiranoc kit?

I went with another IoB myself to maximize on the seaguard and swordmasters. Then maybe a battalion box in either army could help you out. What are some of the things you like about each army could help determine what units to focus on. And yes the white lions should be included in the chariot kit.

Well I played a game earlier in the week and I decided I really like the idea of a bit more shooting.
I don't really want to double up on the IoB purely for aesthetic reasons. The battalion box looks good as this will seriously up the points count, but I'm not entirely sold on militia. I think I will keep a core of Seaguard and then go for a bit more variety.
I like the Shadow Warriors, but I don't really want to buy White Lions, as I don't like them killing the lions. I want to run them, but maybe I'll find a suitable proxy or something. I had an idea of doing a mixed elf force, but just using the different elves to represent something in the High Elf book. I really like the Swordmasters too, and I may look at getting some older ones. I also think the Skycutter is just a great model and the Sea Helm is just too cool to not use, even if his rules are not perfect. I am also interested in using unit filler, like the Lions. They would look really great in the middle of the front rank, maybe do up some handlers for them even?
I think that I will go ahead and use magic too. I usually shy away from this phase of the game but I think I really enjoy High Magic and the way that sort of syncs up with the army itself. I've been playing rather small games and as a result I've been using the Mage a lot. Not really that successful with him yet, but I guess magic isn't all that spectacular in such small games.

Run him as an archmage and could give him the book of hoeth plus a talisman of preservation to fill the arcane items. Or go with a lesser talisman and give him dispel scroll then put him with the swordmasters to buff the ward save with high magic. Also botwd is too good to pass on in bigger games. It can be called cheesey but it works.

This is how I've been running him, sans the book. I can usually only spend around 175 on him as yet. Usually he gets a talisman of some kind and maybe the shrieking sword, as I think this works well with the Swordmasters. Makes the whole whole unit scared right? Rule book is at home lol!

Yes it grants the user fear but not sure about his unit though. The book can be real handy with the rerolling ability. Remember that swordmasters can take a magic standard so I think the wailing banner grants the unit terror as an alternative idea.

Here is how it works if only one model causes fear.
Unit with Hero with the Shrieking Sword is fighting a unit that does not cause fear.
The enemy unit must take a fear test, if they fail, they all drop to WS1. Even the non-fear causing enemies get to hit them as WS1.
If this same unit is fighting a unit that causes fear, like Ogres, they take a fear check. if it is failed, only the models who are subject to fear are reduced to WS1. So the character will be normal WS, his unit will be WS1.

So the Shrieking Sword is a perfect match for this tactic then.
I think that perhaps the next Elf purchase will be the Sea Guard, maybe use a box of spearelfs to convert them? It says on the website that you get the bits to do so in the box. Maybe that and a Tiranoc Chariot so I can use the lions as unit filler later on.
Skavens? I'm thinking Stormvermin still. That would add a much needed toughness to the IoB rats. I've found that in most of the games I've played the Clanrats just weren't tough enough. I'm still not sure how I want the Skaven army to go yet, I'm still shy of large hordes. I recently got some dwarfs too so I wanted to do them differently than usual, ie not all cannons. So I kind of have a feeling that I might do a Dwarf Throng. So this leaves the Skaven with 2 options, go war machine crazy or dominate the magic phase. I'm kind of leaning towards having lots of rat guns... Might be a fun theme...

Bulk up some slave blocks. One of the most cost effective way of doing that is scooping the skaven side from another IoB lot on eBay.
And nab some packmasters/giant rats for darts. At least 4 sets of 5 for proper redirection.
