My buddy picked up the IoB skaven from me and wants to learn the fantasy ropes. I play Ogres, so i feel that this might be a bit unbalanced at such a low point cost, but I still want to try and put together a list for him so we can play. This is what i've put together so far and what I think might work best (i've also included a WLC)- please give me any feedback or C&C/advice- it would be much appreciated. Are there better options for my chieftan/engineer i can look at? I figured the clan superiority banner would be perfect for him considering he's going to easily outrank me. What about composition? Would a block of 30 rats and a 10 man bunker be better? i dunno'... kind of at a loss here so I figured i'd ask the pro's. Thanks!

Oh yeah, this comes out a little above 750, but i don't mind considering i'm just trying to teach him.

SKAVEN 752 POINTS

Chieftan
AHW, BSB (clan superiority)

Engineer
LVL2 (ruin), 3x Warpstones

20x clanrats
FC, poison mortar, chieftan goes here

20x clanrats
Musician, Standard, warpfire thrower, engineer goes here

2x rat ogres

1x warp lightning cannon

Just a heads up, your BSB cannot be your general. It's easy to convert pretty much any skaven spear/banner model into a BSB, just give it a custom super-sized flat or Skaven icon.

Good start. Cannon was a good first addition to the core box set. WIth what you have, only thing I can suggest is to to buy some of the shooty gear for the Engineer.

Keep in mind that Skaven really need numbers more than anything else (rule of thumb is you need 1 body for for every ten points - so at 750 pts you should aim for 75 models.

30 clanrats are generally a minimum for a skaven clanrat unit to survive. Easiest way to get more is to pick up another IoB set, and either trade away or sell the Elves and the rulebook. Find IoB on sale somewhere ($80-$90)and you can usually sell off the non-skaven stuff for a good $50-60 on eBay if your luck is right. Best way to bulk up skaven IMHO.

You'll find that most of the newer plastic kits have giant rats scattered on the sprues, which you can put on individual bases and have a Giant Rat squad. Heck, i've seen people clip off the burning rat from the IoB Warpfire Thrower and put it on it's own base, and just paint the flames like fur.

Ya you need more ratties.
Units if 20 will get demolished quickly especially by monstrous infantry and stuff.

I'd recommend him picking up more clanrats. You can just buy the island of blood rats off eBay for like 20 bucks or so with shipping.

Only bring one of those weapon teams. I'd bring the warpfire thrower and that is it. He might be better off getting a doom wheel but he will use both eventually.

Don't bring a magic banner in such a low points game either. Waste of points. Don't give the engineer any warpstone tokens that is also a points waste.
Give the chieftain a bsb, halberd and talisman of some kind either a 4+ or 5+ ward (tali of preservation or tali of endurance)

If he can get his hands on more clanrats for cheap than go 2 units of 30 with hand weapons and shields (mix the spears in there its fine)

You don't necessarily need a bunker at this low of a points level.
Especially if the chieftain has a 4+ ward. Just keep the engineer out of combat cause he will be the general of your army

To really make the most of the box combine both regiments together into a block of 40 clanrars and take the weapon team of your choice. The mortar is better for the points as this list will want to play defensive to use the cannon to its maximum. Buy the chieftain a ToP and BSB, the warlock is fun with the doomrocket and if you need the magic take him st lvl 1 for the magic missile.

Its debatable if the mortar is actually better. The warpfire thrower is a lot more accurate (shorter range than the mortar obviously) but you can stand and shoot and it causes more damage and larger template.
Other stuff you said is good tho

Chief is pretty solid with the points.

I'd combine the 2 units into a 35 with full command.
You save the points from the 2nd command and 5 rats then, plus the weapons team.

Use those points for a large block of slaves to throw the engineer into.

You want 2 units with atleast 35 bodies in each.

Personally, i would also take 1-2 units of giant rats.
Minimum sized only for blocking any charges and acting as bait or a small shield.

Wont last long, but buys you a turn if needed, so well worth the points.

With the weapons teams, i usually prefer the warpfire thrower over the mortar as i have found the damage output and use is far greater.

Playing at smaller points you will be on a smaller board aswell, meaning less range is needed.

Just my opinions though

I didnt know smaller battles had smaller boards. If that is the case then go for the firethrower by all means.

That's not actually a thing. Its played on a 6x4 board no matter the points value.

If you want to play on a 4x4 foot board for these games that's fine too but that's not necessarily a standard thing. Its like having big battles of 10x4 tables to accommodate more models. Only in certain circumstances would I play that way.

But yes take the warpfire thrower regardless
