Subject: 1850 Tyranids vs Space Marines (Turn 2 Posted)
Got a game in last week, and finally have some time to write a BatRep, so here we go! I'm again running a CAD with an additional Hive Fleet Detachment from the Shield of Baal: Leviathan supplement. This one will have a few more pics than the last few. Also, I just have to mention that this was my first time playing on one of Frontlinegamings Battle Mats, and I must say that they are very impressive. They really help the battlefield look sharp compared to the green wood that a lot of games are played on. If you enjoy the visuals of 40k, I'd say the Mat is worth it's pricetag.
Calgar
Tigurius
4 Honor Guard (3 Relic Blades, 1 Thunder Hammer) in Drop Pod
5 Sternguard (2 Grav pistols, Combi Plas, Heavy Flamer) in Drop Pod
5 man Tactical Squad (Plas/Combi Plas) in Drop Pod
5 man Tactical Squad (Plas/Combi Plas) in Drop Pod
5 Devastators (Missiles with Flakk) in Drop Pod
3 Devastator Centurions (2 Grav, 1 Las on Sergeant, all Missiles)
Stormraven Gunship
For missions we kept it simple, just rolling on the Eternal War table and ending up with the Relic, plus the three usual bonus missions. For deployment, we end up with Dawn of War.
I deploy my Bastion all the way up so I can get close to the Relic, and surround it with my FMCs.
Deployment Space Marines:
Spoiler:
Nothing is deployed! 3 Pods will be coming in turn 1 though.
Turn 1 Tyranids:
Spoiler:
I decide to take the first turn despite my opponent not having anything on the board. My reasoning here is that the Honor guard + Calgar + Tigurius is a very tough unit to shoot to death as I have 0 ap 2 weaponry, and if they were to Pod onto the Relic it would suck for me to deal with that! He could move them steadily backwards while holding the Relic, and although I'd eventually gun the unit down, he'd be firmly entrenched in his own side of the table by then. Also, I wanted all of my units up in the air to minimize damage when the Pods came in!
I send 4 Flyers straight forwards, putting a Crone on top of the Relic so that no one can pick it up next turn. My other crone just lands in a ruin and stays in the ground with a 2+ cover save. I figure my opponent won't be able to shoot him down for First Blood, so I can use him to counter assault.
Turn 1 Space Marines:
Spoiler:
My opponent drops the Sternguard Pod and Calgar's Pod directly in the middle of the board. The Sternguard are inside the building while the Honor guard hold the middle, right by the Crone on top of the Relic.
Then, his Devastator squad lands in a ruin to (by my perspective) the right side of the Relic. The 5 Missile Launchers do two wounds to the Crone with help from the Ultras Devastator Doctrine (reroll snapshots) and the Honor Guards bolter shots. His Sternguard target my landed Crone, but fails to wound after I pass a pair of Feel no Pain rolls!
Turn 2 Tyranids:
Spoiler:
Neither of us have First Blood yet, so I know I have to get that! First I move one Flyrant (my Warlord) over by his Devastators, and also drop my Tyrannofex near them. I cast Psychic Shriek, killing two, and then the combination of flaming and Devourer shots finished off the Marines for First Blood. My forward Crone and a Flyrant pass over the Honor guard, the Crone kills one with a Vector Strike. The Flyrant's shooting then takes three wounds off of Calgar! Finally, my last Flyrant and Crone target his Sternguard, killing only three. My Malanthrope had gotten out of the Bastion to assault and get the "preferred enemy" bubble going, but my opponent chooses to fail his Morale check. Damn you Calgar! My Crone fails the assault, but my Malanthrope rolls the 11" he needs! He then polishes off the two survivors for no wounds taken. Unfortunately, I moved him too far forwards and rolled poorly on consolidation, so the Honor guard are a little too close for comfort...
Turn 2 Space Marines:
Spoiler:
Both Tactical Squads come in, but the Stormraven with Centurions inside does not. They both stick their landings on the Relic, which I sadly left uncovered this turn. There are now 4 Drop Pods on the darn thing! Plasma guns from the two Tac squads on the ground clip a wound from my Warlord. The Honor guard then charge into my Malanthrope and, predictably, beat him to death in short order.
Turn 3 coming soon...
