A friend told me about this.

I figured I'd pass it along.

Surprised you never herd about it, this is old news. I guess if you don't follow Tyranid rumours you would never hear or read it.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

I thought they were WD release rules only. Nice to pick them up via PDF though

Nope, they're also in Shield of Baal: Leviathan and were released for free online when the models dropped. You should still be able to find links to the rules on their individual product pages on the website.

Cool, thanks

That a shift in GW policy? I really thought they were WD only, why give them "for free"?

Actually, it makes sense.

GW is very conscious only releasing rules for models. This way they can release an "incomplete" Codex book on schedule with the publishing schedule and not have to worry about syncing it with the release of the models.

Ultimately they want to sell you the toys, and not having the rules be available for the toys is a barrier to purchase. "Giving away" rules is fairly meaningless to them I imagine.

I mean, it isn't like they really care about the rules anymore, lol.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Totally agree but on the flipside, if they release a model ...say the Tyrannocyte and lock its rules down to only buying WD, thats an extra £2.50 per kit right?
Buy the kit but you must now buy a WD to "play with it".
Why give them away?

Im playing devils advo btw.

Because then they have to print and stock copies of those WD issues.

They already tried that with the BA and SoB Drwafdexes. It seems like a sound idea in theory, but once those issues are out of print, so are the rules. In the case of the SoB, I don't think it was such a concern for GW since the models were already old at that point and one might argue they're not actually trying to sell them at all.

If they do that with their brand new Tyranid Toys, then they're hurting the product line by limiting the number of kits they can sell to the number of print copies of that White Dwarf remain in existence. So while you might get a little extra money in the short term, it loses money long term.

They know when the next codex rolls around you'll buy that anyway, and they can tuck it away in extra supplements too to get you to buy those.

Plus even though the rules are free now, when the new codex eventually drops they won't be anymore, and will likely see some changes anyways.

Hell free rules haven't hurt FW any, and only really serve to sell more stuff in the long run.

Why give them away for free? Let's put it the other way. Why buy a model that you have no rules for? So wouldn't that mean less sales? So would you rather sell an $70+ mini or try and get an extra $3? I believe GW has finally realized trying to milk everyone for that extra $3 is not working and is actually hurting sales they are using Tyranids as a test bed to see if the "free rules" make more sales for them.

GW is changing. Slowly but they are changing.

IIRC the rules are ALSO in the mini box, so GW proably also, rightly figures the rules will be avaliable online, and by puttng them up themselves they can only improve sales (by letting people see what good the mini is) and generate some good will. the simple act of posting these rules for free has garnered them some positive press in the gaming community where they've developed a rep for nickle and diming people

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Mini box? There is no rules in the box at all for them. They are not small either. So not sure what you mean by mini box.
