I want to take Pedro Kantor in a Sternguard drop-pod list and I was wondering where to stick Pedro. Would it be viable at all to give an honor guard squad to pedro?

I went to Hershey Park in central PA this year, and I have to say I was more than a little disappointed. I fully expected the entire theme park to be make entirely of chocolate, but no. Here in America, we have "building codes," and some other nonsense about chocolate melting if don't store it someplace kept below room temperature.

I run HG in my SG drop pod list. It works well, id advise a uniformity in the weapons for the honor guardz

There is only the Emperor! He is our shield and protector.

Honor Guard synchronize well with Pedro's +1A ability. Since they all have two melee weapons, they end up with a ton of attacks on the charge. I don't go overboard with their weapons though, only the Champion gets a Relic Blade.

Keep in mind that 7th is still an entirely dakka based edition. Things that shoot will almost always do more good for you than assault units.

I think you should put Pedro in a packed out sternguard squad.

He shoots as well and can be there to help remove any units that assault them. You could even give the sergeant a powerfist to go with his combi-weapon.

...Or if you really want an honor guard then you can give them guns too.

the thing people frequently forget is Sternguard have 2A base, 3 with Pedro. They actually stand a decent chance in Assault.

Lately, my local meta has seen a lot of newer munchkins who see all the rage about Tau/ Eldar cheese and go for shooty armies, so assault is actually viable in my area in a backwards kind of way since really assaulty infantry throw everyone for a loop. I was thinking of putting Pedro into a squad of honor guard and giving them a drop pod to form a neat little spearhead kind of strategy where I drop Pedro and his buddies somewhere in the middle where the +1A can be made the most of.

Follow up question: How best to kit out Honor Guard? I noticed that they come in threes standard, but that feels flimsy to me. Is a full-on ten-man squad ever a good idea? I also am dubious about only giving the champion a relic blade. Ten point relic blades are something I would love to put everywhere.

Depends. Are you fighting a lot of Sv 2+/3+ folks?

My most frequent opponent is a Raven Guard player.

I might toss a guy with a power axe into the squad, incase you need to take down some TEQ. But for the most part, a zillion attacks at initiative should put the hurt on them anyway. With the relic blade, you give up an attack for strength. Probably worth getting some, but the points are going to add up on you, so I don’t know if I’d take all of them. How much killing does one squad need to do? At some point, diminishing returns is going to kick in, and the basic HG should work fine without more toys.

Usually i take pedro with 9 honor guard in a pod.

Give serg melta bombs, and 3 of them axe's.

You come down, drop 18 rerolling 1 bolter shots and pedro's storm bolter and pods bolter, wiping a mob of infantry or glancing apart some armor 10 stuff. after that you get charged and win, or get to charge what you want.

They're surprisingly okay in a Raptors list. After dropping them in and doing meh Bolter fire, you keep them still and unleash Rending shots each turn, or charge where needed.

Have you considered a Storm Raven? I know you have a Drop Pod list but having an SR come in Turn 2 when your opponent already has the Pods to worry about could be a good idea. Fly in, unload some dakka with the Raven, then disembark and charge in with 5 attacks per HG.

After much thought, i have come to the conclusion that the best solution is power mauls. You throw so many high str attacks that armor saves do not matter and can threaten MC's as well

Then I'd suggest Honour Guard without the Relic Blade upgrade.

Mathing...A power sword attack is about twice as effective as a power maul attack fighting MEQ starting from S4 (4+ to wound/no save vs. 2+ to wound/3+ save).

What flavor basic power weapon depends a lot on your target.

Axes for TEQ
Swords for MEQ
Mauls for everything else.
Spears for looks, or for charge happy units.

While the sword has a very small niche, (only MEQ) there tends to be a lot of them out there, so it’s still worth taking them. Mauls are very flexible, with the high strength being able to put wounds on anything, but they will probably be getting their armor save. Axes strike last, but cut through everything.

The relic blade combines the best of the sword and maul, but at the cost of your extra attack for having a pistol. And concussive, which can matter sometimes. Not sure if it’s worth the points, but on the bright side, it’s not that many.
