Hey all, I'm brand new to IG, and DakkaDakka. I want a more infantry heavy army, but still with some mech.
ATM I have: 3 Squads of Cadian Shock Troopers ( 2 Grenade Launchers, 1 flamer)
1 Heavy Weapon Squad. ( 2 Auto-cannons and a Mortar)
1 Cadian Command Squad ( Flamer, Power-fist)
1 Armored Sentinel (Auto-cannon)
1 Leman Russ ( Magnetized weapons)
1 Chimera with Multi-laser and heavy flamer.
Any help? I'm trying to beef it up to around 1200pts. I play against Orks a lot... Thanks. P.S: I am trying to make this Semi-Competitive.

As I try to impress on the young whelps in my charge these days, it isn't the scarlet sash and the fancy hat that makes you a commissar, it's the way you wear them. The troops you serve with are never going to like you, but if you can get them to respect you that can be almost as good. Remember, you're going to spend most of your career on a battlefield with them, and they've all got guns, so making them think you're a liability is never going to be a very good idea. - Commisar Ciaphas Cain

Welcome to the Guard and dakkadakka

well if you want more mech. you want to know if you want to go in the offene or stay back. In case of orks you want to stay back and blast away stuff. You have the choice of taking more leman russes, or taking our best artillery units, the manticore can shoot d3 large blast strength 10ap 4 of pure rape, or the wyvern who will rape horde armies, or the basilisk who will rape too, in the end you will rape if you use it right

wyveren is a must have on almost any IG list..its cheap and effective..i enjoy my basalisk but in 600 points its kind of pricey. Autocannons are prob the best pound for pound HW team option, but keep in mind HW teams are really only suited for gunline defense type situations, if your playing against orcs your going to want a nice rapid fireing blanket of troops backed with atleast one or two command units to keep them pumping out "front rank fire, second rank fire". tank wise i enjoy my leman battle tank(even though its considered meh because its an ordnance weapon) otherwise the punisher is quite nice, specially with pask. The key with orcs is that you need to put holes in the giant boat of boyz before they hit your shore line.

the leman russ exterminator is hated by ork Players if you put a hull mounted lascannon and heavy bolter sponsons. And try to take 4 flamers in your PCS or if you have other plans with them, take a/ some SWS with 3 flamers, this says " F*ck you" to hordes. Or take mortar squads to spam pie plates. Or take valkyries with plasma vets inside. If you have a fetish with russes, take a tank commander or pask, and put him in a punisher with his 2 tanks as back up

Welcome to the Guard!

I'm assuming you're doing something like this:

1 HQ
- 5 Company Command + 1 Officer

2 Troops
- 10 Veterans

- 5 Platoon Command
- 10 Guardsmen
- 10 Guardsmen

1 Transport
- Chimera (MtL & HF)

1 Fast
- Armored Sentinel

1 Heavy
- 1 Leman Russ

Weapons distribution
- Power Fist looks good, but is rarely a good choice, given the low stats of the model - for the same points, you could have gotten more Flamers!
- For what you have, I'd seriously consider reconfiguring the Veterans as carrying 3 Flamers and throwing them in the Chimera (which is fine as-is). Roll up, disembark, and light 'em up!
- The Company Command Squad can take 3 Grenade Launchers to leverage the BS4 Veterans.
- The Infantry Autocannons are fine, although I am a bigger fan of Missile Launchers

Adding 400 pts?
I'd add at least 1 more Russ. Against Orcs, the flame variant is far better than a Hellhound, but you won't go wrong with the Battlecannon or Demolisher.
I'd consider a Valkyrie, as it's a seriously cool kit.

Or you could just add a single Imperial Knight Titan for 350-odd pts. It's quite the centerpiece model, combining the firepower of 2 Leman Russes while adding some countercharge via Stomp attacks..

Enjoy!

Again welcome to the Guard. As already mentioned the Wyvern is a great cheap unit, though some consider it cheese for how cheap it is for how many wounds it can put out per game. The Leman Russ is also an amazing tank if you want relatively cheap 14 front armor on the field. It does have a lot of variants, but don't underestimate the power of a bare battle tank; I use them all the time because when they wound they almost always have the insta-death rule because of its strength. These type of vehicles go great with infantry heavy lists because you can bury them in the midst of the blobs to prevent assaults on them and to give them a cover save. Last thing I can say, don't forget about your orders, the more troops you have the more crucial they become. Lasguns may be weak, but enemies can only make so many of their saves.
