Yes! Two of my three favorite films of the year. Now if Lego can just win best picture...

Haven't seen Birdman yet, but Grand Budapest was fantastic.

Birdman is less of a movie more of a mind trip set on a Broadway stage.

I should probably actually bet on the winners this year, the last 2 years in a row I've gotten almost every single category right (excepting stuff that basically no one has seen, like Best Animated Short).

Oh I just noticed that The Lego Movie missed out on a Best Animated Picture nod. Ouch, I did not expect that, it must have been a victim of the Academy's voting method... or maybe the Academy is just too damn stuffy? Still, extremely surprising.

the awards nominations don't always match up with the opinion of the average viewer and there likes and such.

Watch out, kids. The "too many white people" and "whitest Oscars ever" articles are coming out of the woodwork.

While I'm surprised the Lego movie isn't on there, I'm more surprised The Book of Life wasn't.

They changed the rules a few years ago as to what constitutes what and I don't think anyone was happy really with the changes, except maybe the winners. Honestly I think compartmentalizing animated film to its own category is unnecessary; there is no reason LEGO movie shouldn't also be up for Best Film.

LEGO movie wasnt that great was it? I laughed at a few bits but most adults I saw in the theater looked bored as hell. Even the kids didnt laugh too much at it. If anything it was popular with teenagers, but thats usually the case with animated films.

I thought Birdman was pretty cool. I went in thinking it was gonna be another super hero movie, was a nice surprise.

I dont really care for any other nominee though.

Who actually votes for these etc? Is it done by people or is it done by a bunch of rich guys?

I must be the only person who hated Birdman. I found it both self-indulgent and dull, which is a weirdly dissatisfying combination.

I'm amused people still give 2 gaks about the Oscars.

I haven't seen Birdman so don't have an opinion on it. I just don't like that animated film, which can sometimes be far better than live action offerings, is hidden away from even the chance to get Best Film.

I know, right? Not even a nomination. That doesn't make sense.

Saw one already. We're all racist misogynists. Again.

Guess it's nice that it's not over a video game this time.

Didn't see Birdman.

Loved Grand Budapest. Such a great movie that hits you right in the feels.

The Oscars are a bit bs sometimes.

Off the top of my head, The Fellowship of the Ring not receiving any and Joaquin Phoenix not getting best supporting actor or his role in Gladiator...

The biggest sign that the Oscars are a joke was when the Academy decided Titanic was as worthy a film as Ben-Hur or the Lord of the Rings saga (because let's face it, the RotK awards were really for the entire trilogy).

How to Train Your Dragon 2, maybe. That and The Lego Movie were definitely the front-runners to win, although now it's basically in the bag for HTTYD2 at this point.

Up got nominated for Best Picture a few years ago and, imho, should have won.

I agree. Couldn't one still win best film though (ie both?)

In Frazzled top Five of 2014 I'd put:

*Budapest
*Birdman
*Lego Movie
*Fury
*Orange is the New Black (yea thats right suck it, all the other movies were warmed over meh).

It won Bet Animated Feature and I think they changed the rules after that as far as what could make it to Best Picture.

I think you're selling Boxtrolls a fair bit short. The movie is fantastic.

Like I said before, I'm genuinely surprised Book of Life wasn't nominated, as it's my favorite animated movie from this year.

I'm surprised Interstellar didn't get nominated for more, I thought it was one of the better movies this year.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Nice, I'll have to see if I can find it.

As for Boxtrolls, I should see about watching that as well. The problem with some categories though (like Animated Feature) is that certain films don't get viewed and so the votes go to the most popular film... which will be HTTYD2 in this case.
