Hey everyone, noob here starting my first Ork 40k Ork Army, mostly for modelling fun with some conversions, but also to play the basics and local play, got my paints ready, glue, gubbins and a box of boyz. Starting with some sluggas with choppas, and Nob with PK. Bit confused (slightly embarrassing) by all the extra bits though. Can I use the odd shoulder pad etc to customize my guys? and what about the stick bombz? I know my guys can have them, but can I adorn a couple with them to show they're equipped? or am I way off base here? want to use them as I learn at the shop, so don't wanna glue something on there that shouldn't be. So yeah, hey! noooob lol

Welcome to the hobby mate! You can customise your figures however you like! Go ahead and stick on those shoulder pads and anything else you like. You're quite right about the stick bombs but as long as they are listed in the wargear for whatever unit you're building then go right ahead most people aren't going to stop you playing over things like that anyway as long as your army lists are all kosher have fun!

Welcome to the green side!

The best thing you can do with the bitz is to make a "Bitz Box". as you can imagine, this is a box full of the spare bitz.

Once you've gotten a few boxes of boys, you'll find you've accumulated quite a few bitz like shoulder pads. these can then be used to create a unit of 'ard boys.

kustomisation is one of the most fun aspects of the ork army. as the real limitations on the modelling is far less strict than on an imperial army. Slugga? pistol weapon. Shoota? bigger weapon. Choppa? something you can swing. you can model anything onto boys and as long as it's got the same fundamental principle as the weapon it's representing (IE you hit people with it) then it's fair game, and invariably nice to see.

and remember - there's not a vehicle in the codex you can't make from enough trukks.

Bitz are orks best and greatest rescource.
They can be far more crazy, unique than any other army.

Almost anything can be looted and made orky from a bolt pistol to a baneblade even a tyranoid carnifax.
A choppa can be a axe, sword, spear, knife, long as you can tell what they are there is no problem.

Hey guys, great replies here thanks . Just to clarify as there seen to be two approaches here, I'm sure it's inevitable I'll end up with a bits box! Which is great. But at what point does what I have equipped on a boy change his stats. Ie, how many shoulder pads can I use without having an Ard boy in my mob, and likewise with stickboms, can I stick the bomb backpack on a regular boy or a stik bomb on a belt or in hand with a slugga without making him a tankbusta or whatever. Not explained in the codex for noobs! Cheers!

Long as you clearly explain the what has what gear and upgrades there is not too many problems, only time that is cast in stone is tournament environment.

If you clearly make it known pre game, I don,t see any issue at all for the odd stickybomb or such on boys.

A tankbusta will have very specific equipment (tankhamma iirc) & as for ardboyz if you elect to make a unit of them make sure you give them 2 shoulder pads each, a helmeted head & can even use a shoulderpad cut in half as torso armour plates in the case of the larger ones. Then paint their armour plates a specific color that helps distinguish them from boyz. That's what I'd do anyway. Where I'd be more careful though is with specific weapons. If boyz can only take a single rokkit launcha in their unit them don't equip multiple with them as that can get confusing. Ultimately just ask yourself: could I tell what this was (or was not) if I saw it across the table from me? If the answer is yes then you're good.
