Subject: [Mordheim] Best of the Expanded/Unofficial/Experimental Warbands

So, I'm trying to get some friends together for campaign of Mordheim, and I've discovered that there are a ton of extra Warbands, above and beyond what was found in Mordheim and Empire in Flames. I know that the safest route would probably be to stick with the Core/EiF warbands only, but as my friends are all veteran Warhammer players, invariably someone is going to want to try using their favorite WHFB race from one of the expanded Warbands.
In general, which Warband lists outside of the Core and Empire in Flames supplements are considered the most well balanced, and are there any that should be avoided entirely?
Thanks in advance for any information.

Too general? Ok, let's get into specifics.
Assuming that every "official" warband on Mordheimers website is allowed (core warbands, Carnival of Chaos, Beastmen Raiders, Kislev, Orcs and Goblins, Dwarfs, Averland, and Ostland), which of the Elven warband lists fit in well competitively? What about the Bretonnian and "Black Dwarf" Chaos Dwarf warband rules?

Check out the mordheimer.com it will answer all your questions. I would recommend start within the core warbands just to get a feel for the game before getting too advanced.

IIRC the mousillon setting brings in some really interesting warbands. My favorite was actually the Disciples of Maldred or somesuch. Pretty much grail knights who were lured into following a bad man who used a false grail to bind them to him. They're my favorite for fluff alone.

In my limited experience, the core and unofficial lists are pretty well made and work in the spirit of the game. If it's based on a core WFB army, it has probably received a good amount of attention. If it's in the experimental realm, or where someone's personal bit of fluff shows up that you start to see problems.
Once you start it should become quickly apparent if something is totally broken. Otherwise just talk it over with your buddies and figure a compromise.

So after a lot of review, a lot of forum visits, some time on YouTube, and some time spent actually trying to devise warbands, I've come to the conclusion that anything released in Town Cryer for an alternative setting (Lustria, Khemri, etc.) does not play well in Mordheim, but works great in a Warhamme Fantasy Skirmish setting, with lists drawn exclusively from the variant settings. The special rules bloat and power creep in most of the WHFB-inspired warbands makes them stand pretty far apart from most of what you find in the Core Book/Empire in Flames. We've stripped down the warband selection to the Core Book, Empire in Flames, Averlanders, Ostlanders, Bretonnians, and a few Elf lists that I cooked up. Everything else seems really out of place and over-designed when compared to the main rulebook warbands.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

The bands from the Border Town Burning fan supplement are pretty reasonably balanced against the "core" GW stuff in my view, as are the ones from the new(still in-development) Murder in Marienburg setting being done by some of the BTB guys.
If you're feeling adventurous you could give my own Clan Moulder Skaven list a go, although honestly I can't say how balanced they'll be in a campaign as they've only been tested in a couple of one-off games so far. If you do try them I'd appreciate any feedback you have.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal |

In campaign play the list you have to worry about the most, in my experience, comes straight from the core book.
Skaven have access to more heroes than anyone else, and more heroes means better after action. Add to that the fact that they have a larger warband size than everyone else, and can swarm the board with more 21 point verminkin with a sling than you can deal with.
