I was reading the Tyranid poll regarding two fleets crossing oaths, and it occurred to me that the Hive Mind is very much like a Chaos God who's grown so powerful that his Daemons consume entire galaxies and is now coming to this one. Nids definitely are NOT my specialtt, so Anybody know more about 'Nids and can prove me wrong/right?

Well they're definitely not a Chaos God. Unless that's just an analogy?

Yeah, it's more of an analogy. I guess I should say an incredibly powerful sentient being that resides in the Warp

Do Tyranids use the warp to communicate, or are their psychic abiliities somehow different? If they do, doesn't that sort of contradict the idea that the immaterium only exists within the galaxy (and not inbetween)?

I think they don't use the warp, and hats why they can't use any other psychic powers than their own? They have their own thing that messes with the warp, I think. And in a Commisar Cain book they discovered hive fleets attack each other when theirs no synapse to hold them all together. Like 2 rival pack beasts

The warp could theoretically exists outside of the galaxy. the reason for this is because the warp is psycho active and reacts to emotions, if there was nothing there to have emotions, like say in intergalactic space, then there would be nothing but a void, but that doesn't mean there is a physical barrier at the end of our galaxy that stops the warp.

Secondly, I agree that the analogy could be correct, as the chaos gods use a portion of their essence to create each daemon. which is similar to what the Tyranids do. However the main difference is the tyranids are of the material universe and their consciousness is projected into the warp as an area to hold it together, where as the chaos gods are of the empyrean and project their will into the material universe to gain more power and followers through the expression of strongly aligned emotions and consequences. So you could say the Hive mind is like the antithesis to a Chaos God.

I guess the difference is that there are some warp entities that are connected to just one physical being (e.g., a psyker), and then there are warp entities that emerge from the psychic gestalt of all those individuals (e.g, the Big 4 and the Daemons who are aspects of them). In that sense, the Hive Mind is something analogous to a Chaos God.

It is possible that they all do share a collective consciousness, but the thing is, genestealers can operate independently from the hive mind and come under its influence as the hive fleet and a way to defeat the Tyranids is to destroy the hive nodes and shut down the hive mind. I personally believe that they are all under the control of something, I don't know what, but a warp entity is possible.

In order to save biomass and resources most creatures are not Synapse creatures. Think of them as radios. Most creatures are only able to recieve but not broadcast information. The larger synapse creatures like Warriors can do both. And the bigger ones like Hive Tyrants are priority channels who override the Warriors' frequency. Its more efficient to broadcast over a large area to Recieve Only than to have each and every creature being able to broadcast. So when you take out the local broadcaster the recievers have no new information and given their hypermetabolic bodies, kill and eat the nearest thing in a desperate attempt not to starve to death.

The other part is that giving each creature a transmitter might overload the network with useless chatter revolving around "Greeskin tastes good, fishmen need salt and pepper," and you also don't want to nake them intelligent enough ti question, suggest that they don't want to march to waste enemy ammo, or even stage revolution.

My point is that they do not share a collective consciousness

It is less a collective consciousness and more like a giant brain, which each Tyranid being a neuron.

How are these things different? Both achieve a single consciousness controlled by the sum of the species?

No, the latter forms a multitude of brains - one within composed of each Hive Fleet - while the other is just one big consciousness.

The latest codex is extremely clear on this; there is a singular Hive Mind that controls every fleet. Each fleet is self-sufficient and distinct in a sense, but just as the minds of individual of Hormagaunts make up a brood and the minds of every Tyranid in range make up the fleet, the fleets make up the Hive Mind itself. It is definitely, absolutely, linked together. Page 6 if you want to go looking for it.
