I play eldar and i have a friend who plays necrons. He believes that the necrons are the greatest army ever, etc, etc. I am determined to prove him wrong. Any advice or tips is appreciated.

Well they have a new book coming soon.....So wait til then. The book will get the "balance" treatment.

Plus it sounds like he has read the lore in the codex, Matt ward likes to go over the top and just blow things out the window(in 40k world, thats huge). Eldar have the cheesy list by far...But if you play them like a normal person and use skill, you will still give him a good match.

Saying the Eldar won the War in Heaven is like saying a child won a fight with a murderer simply because after breaking into his house, shooting his mother and father through the head, the thug took off in a car instead of finishing off the kid.

The Serpents tend to struggle against the AV 13 wall lists (AB, CCB, GA etc.) I would take 3 Wraithknights first, and then fill the ranks with DA Serpents

More AT than standard, thats for sure.

Dark Reapers are better against Crons than against most:
-s5ap3 x2 eats their footsloggers
-s8ap3 ignore jink should scare the piss out of their skimmers
-Reapers vulnerability to small arms fire matters much less as Crons can't really put any small arms down-field
-Welcome back! (Fluffwise, their aspect comes from Khaine absorbing part of a C'tan iirc)

That said, I think they'd be OK, not amazing. But I'd field them!

Pre-update, at least, 2xBL Wraithlord will take their lunch money. Good against most of their stuff. Any MC does, really.

Necrons seem to have a cap of 24" when it comes to range. You can just run around and poke them. Also wraithlords. The necron stock weapon is S4 and can't wound T8.

I am not a bastard. I am the Bastard and its Mr. Bastard to you!

Grand Rapids Metro

Due to low initiative, I've found Blind to be a fair tactic.

Get a 6 man swooping hawk team with an exarch sunrifle.

Cheap but effective.

I play against competitive Eldar all the time (my main army is Necrons). What really hurts Necrons are invisible jetbikes and lance weapons and basically any weapon that is very long range.
Most Necron weapons have a range of 24", so if you're running around the board turbo boosting jetbikes, and firing long range lance weapons and dooming all our units, we're going to have a very hard time unless he's running a full flyer list.
Eldar currently have the cheesiest codex in the entire game, so I'm sure you can come up with something.

...and you do believe eldar codex lore is reasonable?

Wait, you think Necron lore is less Mary-Sue than Eldar?

The ancient race that relies on mobility and manipulations, and a full bag of tricks, has this 'webway' network that let's them show up basically wherever they want, with virtually no transit time. Sounds about right.

The ancient innumerable lumbering evil that is slow and unstoppable with amazing technology can only be slowed and ran from. They have tech that dwarfs even the Eldar, and there is no stopping them. They are slowly taking over the galaxy.

Oh, and they can use the Webway. So they can go anywhere at any time. This slow, unstoppable menace is also more mobile than anyone but Dark Eldar. How is that less Mary Sue than Eldar?

To say nothing of the Celestial Orrary. I get it, they have the best tech ever. And the Orrary sounds OK to me as a relic of the War in Heaven. But it doesn't end there...

Eldar have the corny listing undoubtedly...But when an individual play them just like a normal particular person and employ skill, in the end you give him an excellent complement.
