Does anyone else get to a certain point where you have so much for your respective army that you either want nothing but FW or just start another army? I'm have both GKs, and CSM at the moment, both armies are pretty massive. I've noticed there is very little that I would want to purchase to expand these armies aside from FW products. The catch is since FW products are much more expensive, I can't justify the prices. So, I usually start a different army instead. Anyone else have this problem?
Nah, my problem is waiting on a particular boutique model company to release a handful of kits so I can buy everything in one go and have a new all resin Guard army.

Yeah, but I actually at this point think Forge World is a good way to go.
You don't need to buy stuff as often, but when you do its super special. And really, Forge World prices aren't that bad.

Not there yet. While I can field a reinforced battle company, there are still lots of things I need. Mostly tanks. I am at the point where I have more power armored guys then I’ll ever field though. So even with around 8,000 point of Ultras, still plenty of things to pick up.
Not that I don’t covet FW stuff, but I’m not at the point where it’s the only option.
I think I orbit 'that point' on a semi-permanent basis, but never reach it. I have several armieis, from multiple systems, that are just a purchase or two away from completion, but instead of actually buying thosee things, I get dragging away towards something else. Case in point, my BA need 2 more Tactical boxes for finish them up as a force... I have the money, and I imagine by the end of the week it will be spent on some LotR Dwarves, some Harlequins and some Malifaux models. And when I'm close to finishing those forces, of course I'll go and buy some Infinity or Deadzone...
This is where the player suffers for the lack of specialist games - I'd love to be able to expand my forces into space and into much larger scale forces, but that's just not a realistic option these days.
Some may choose to build another faction, I've gone on to other games.

Part of me wants to buy miniatures, just because i think they are cool, but then i realise that most of what i already have isn't fully painted yet.
I went through my collection fairly recently, and honestly, half the stuff i can't remember buying. and i even turned up a few unexpected things. Most of it ended up on ebay, where i got more than i honestly expected, and more than i payed for it in a lot of cases.
Past finishing my Imperial fists battle company, my 40k projects include a 1st/2nd edition Space wolf army, all metal, of course. and i even managed to find a NIB RTB01, and while part of me is keen to open it, another part thinks that will spoil the fun, i'm fairly sure my memory of them is more impressive than the models themselves (so i may buy a load on ebay)
Otherwise, i've been getting into more skirmish games, i recently went halves on the new infinity boxed set, and painting 20 miniatures or so per faction is a lot more doable than painting hundreds of GW miniatures, and will allow me to be more impulsive with my buys.
Looking at other games, and other miniatures also gives me the opportunity to add character to a 40k army, i recently saw the War nachine Iron Mother and thought that would make an awesome insane necron lord/counts as C'tan, and raging heroes have some awesome figures as well.
Honestly, with the demise of specialist games, and thus no skirmish games, or epic scale games, there is really no excuse not to try out other systems. although they may turn you totally against GW's shoddy rule writing and game balance. I've only played a few games of Infinity, and lost horribly each time, but the elegance and simplicity of the rules system hides a truly deep tactical game.
All that being said, i'm still debating getting myself some honour guard using some FW MKIII minis
When I hit that point with Necrons, I started into historicals. I know some people are scififanstasy only, but I have an ancient Roman army I love to work on. I know others have WWII and stuff like that. I love some Hail Caesar games, there is an active scene at my flgs for ancients and historicals. It's a great diversion from massive firepower games, and collecting is massively cheaper than the top sci fi games.
I'd like to try the other sci fi games like infinity and so forth, but no one in my circle of gaming friends play them , so there's no point sinking money into them for me.

I'm almost finished with my Ork army, in terms of what I 'need', since I have a decent sized army for both normal and apoc sized games. I could move on to another army, but I likely wont because of how expensive it is to get into a new one, and I likely wont have the ambition to paint ANOTHER army after having painted so many Orks. And then there is a matter of where to store or how to carry so many models. I have a hard enough time finding space for my Orks, let alone anything else.
So, I often play other games to get my 'need new stuff' fix. I play Heroclix, which has rapid releases and keeps me sated on new plastic toys, or I play Dice Masters so I can toss some dice around without having to pull out miniatures.
On the topic of FW, the reason I don't buy from them is the prices are unattractive for anything I'd be interested in buying, and they are sub par anyway. I'd love to own some Squiggoths, but I'll be damned if I spend over 100 dollars for the Large one, and I'm NOT paying 200+ for the Gargantuan one. I'm also not spending insane amounts for their version of the Stompa, nor will I buy the Mega Dread. I honestly feel the Mega Dread looks terrible, even for Ork standards.
Even after reading the IA book for Orks, I wasn't really that impressed with their rules for Orks either.
I COULD buy some units for my CSM, but I don't want to waste money on units that I will never field (Mutilators, Warp Talons, 1k Sons).
I could try out other games but unfortunately, the players here really only play 40k. Some started to get into Warhammer Fantasy and Dystopian Wars, but it never really got big.
I have tons of stuff that needs painted, but I have the ever present problem of always looking at the next project instead of the 400+models that need painted in front of me lol. Which, I am slowly working on.
I will say that 1 decent sized order to FW once in a while is a nice idea. I may have to try that.
Yeah, I sort of hit this problem. I have a guard army that doesn't have the maximum number of everything, but I've got enough that I can reasonably expect to have whatever I'm going to want to bring on-hand. Or at least within very reasonable proxy.
My solution was, like others, to kind of pick at a second army of various types. For the last year, though, I've been mostly working on terrain. There's never enough of it, and it's the top thing on my list of modelling stuff I need to do to make my games better, now that my main army is basically done.
I am thinking about revisiting my guard army a bit, though. I'm a lot better of a painter now than I was when I first picked out my guard scheme. I'm thinking of going back in and redoing a couple of squads - not as in stripping and repainting, but just adding more guys with better technique.

DBA (De Bellis Antiquitus I think is what it stands for or "Battles of Antiquity") is dirt cheap to play and plenty strategic enough. It's a little but too dependent on dice and is extremely exactling when it comes to movement which is good and bad (I mean the arguments most common to it are regarding charge distances for all the obvious reasons and you DO want to pre-build some handy measuring tools for it). But it also has a really interesting combat matrix that allows ANY era to be played against other eras or just within their own. Literally hundreds of armies are represented by the game from Babylon to Samurai.
Every army is 12 stands of troops. Every army is definited by its history, subject to balance. Every army ranges in TOTAL COST from $18 to $60 out the door and they take up so little space its laughable. So the number of units is about the same as your average 1500 point 40K game and the cost is a FRACTION of it.
Now I don't actually choose. I play basically everything. Star Trek, Star Wars, Flames of War, 40K, Babylon 5: A Call to Arms, Fantasy, War of the Ring, SAGA, Infinity, War machine and Lord knows how many other games. I own forces for all of them. Extensive forces. so this is no advertisement against 40K. In fact I would say that because I DO have so many games to play, 40K stays fresh and fun for me.
Variety is good.
