Evening guys! I'm slowly making my way through painting my 1000 point tau army and of course.. I'm getting a touch itchy to play a few games! I've about 5 games (using a buddies Tau army) to my name currently and I'd like to start having a few smaller scale skirmishes with my own minis.

Below is a 500 point list I've put together that either uses minis I currently own or uses units that will be fielded in my final 1000 points. Let me know what you think guys I've gone for a fairly suit heavy list - currently I'm unsure as to whether I want to go for the 3 missiles broadsides or drop them for an extra fire warrior and a riptide. I originally went for the riptide but became worried about the cheese of one in a 500 point list! Another thought - I believe it'd be a little more competitive to go for another squad of kroot in place of my Fire Warriors but my thinking there.. was none existent! I just love fire warriors so much :3

HQ
Ethereal - 50

Troops
Fire Warriors x7 - 63

Kroot x10 - 65
hound

Elite
Cirsis Suits x3 - 126
TL Fusion Blasters

Heavy Support
Broadsides x3 - 195
TL High Yield Missile Missile Pod
TL Smart Misssile System

The general concept of the list -

Ethereal and Fire Warriors hold back (of course...) and maintain the ethereal's handy bubble of goodness. Broadsides unleash far too many missile shots at enemy stuff then T2 onwards, suits DS and deal with any enemy armor whilst kroot outflank and either pile on some more pressure or aim to contest an objective.

Let me know guys! I really appreciate any assistance.

Aardvark.

Looks ok, but I think it can be better set up to the way you want to play, which looks like a gun line approach with some mobile elements? What would really help would be a list of your available models? But, working on what you have listed here I would suggest the following changes.

Firstly, you are right about the Riptide - at 500 points it would garner a lot of hate. Definitely leave him out until you get to 1000pts. I don't really like the ethereal for the role you want him in - his dakka bonus is only at short range while he himself is a very squishy character who gives up an extra VP if killed. Personally I would change him for a fireblade (if you don't have one, just use a fire warrior with distinctive painted shoulder shield) as his dakka bonus applies to both the full range and short range shooting. He also comes with a marker light and can use it on a different target to his unit as he has split fire, and is much more durable (with no extra VP if killed).

3x Crisis with fusion is a bit much at 500 points - you are not likely to run into that much heavy armour. Personally I would split the unit into a single suit unit and a double suit unit, to give you more flexibility in terms of deployment, loadout and target selection. Also, as a rule dual weapons is better than TL weapons. Finally the broadsides - three might be overkill at this level. I think you are better off dropping one and using the left over points to improve some of the other units (Crisis and FW). I would also run them as separate units to avoid break tests, allowing them to shoot at different targets and causing them to be targeted individually. Maybe try to get EWO on at least one to intercept any deep strikers. My revised list would be something like:

Cadre Fireblade, 60pts (goes with 10 man FW team)
Fire Warriors x9, 81pts
Kroot x10, Hound 65pts
Crisis x1, Dual Fusion Blaster 52
Crisis x2, Dual Plasma 104
Broadside x1, TL HYMP, TL SMS, EWO 70
Broadside x1, TL HYMP, TL SMS, Advanced Targeting System 68

Total 500

This gives you a gun line with 20x S5 shots at 30" range from the FW team, an Interceptor Missileside for deep strikers and outflankers, and an ATS Missileside for picking off Characters / Specialists in units. Mobile element consists of a solo fusion suit for going after tanks, a double plasma team for going after TEQ, and Kroot outflanking to capture objectives in late game.

Hope that helps!

Fantastic help! Thank you so much buddy, incredibly detailed response and a list I'm more than happy to use.

Especially fond of the more appropriate use of suits in the army, rather than just spamming as many missiles as possible!

Thanks for your input buddy, it has been extremely valuable.

If you want to keep your list the way it is, the only changes would be;

1-turn kroot into 7 fire warriors
2-turn suits into 3 1 man units
3-turn broadsides into 3 1 man units

Why? in 500pts chances are they will either deepstrike or sit back. If they deepstrike then they only kill 1 suit/side and leave your pretty much unharmed, if they sit back that means you can kill more targets and take more objectives.

Good luck.
