I've agreed to build my brother a gaming table. It'll be 8' x 4' with a lip running around the edge. This will allow tiles to be slotted in and held securely in place.
The table will eventually have several gaming surfaces but the initial will be a in industrial/Admec facility which with the addition of walls will convert into a spaceship/station zone mortalis board. Storage of additional tiles will be on runners under the table.
I've tested out a few ideas like recessed pipe sections on other projects:

I've started off with 600mm x 600mm squares in 12mm
mdf. Insulation foam will then add a bit of depth to delve into with recessed details and it'll be topped off with some interesting industrial surfaces.

Once my phones charged I'll be able to take a photo showing all the recessed areas edged with cardboard, the gaps filled in with insulation and the edges capped with signage board.
