Winning=More Fans/increased corporate sponsership
More Fans/Sponsors=More Profit
Therefore,
More Wins=More Profit

When we add that Better Players=More Wins, it becomes

Better Players=More Profits

Because the franchise wants to maximize profits, they naturally seek out better players. The players are therefore in demand. They supply Skills, and will work for the highest bidder.

Cue arms race.

In the end, it shows that the amount of work (ignoring the intense amount of training pro athletes require) is not the driving force of the wage- it is simply what a franchise is willing to pay.

To be fair, I will most likely earn more than he does at the end. I can, and will, pursue my career until the end of my life which means that I have about 30 years ahead of me, more if possible. My salary will increase significantally in the next few years while he will no longer be able to play football at my current age. Sure, advertisement and such, and being a coach, but those pay far less than what you earn as a regular player.

They get paid according to their market value. It just so happens that there's a lot of money in professional football, therefore they're worth quite a lot. Capitalism 101. Whinging about it is just jealousy. And for the record I earn just £200 a week. And I don't watch football.

What DOES offend me, is when people who risk their lives for a living e.g. soldiers get paid a pittance.
