Every time I consider using any of the chapter's relics, I read the rules for them and am slightly impressed, then I look at their prices and I'm ultimately disappointed. The only one that I've actually seen used somewhat effectively is giving a bike chaplain the mace of redemption, the rest are honestly just for fluff. In general, they could all use a points drop by 5 or more points to be competitive, especially when compared to some of the other armies relics. You're generally better off taking a named character than you are using a company master with relics.
Instead of dropping points, there's also the option of making these weapons more practical. The following is proposed changes to the relics, if we keep the points values the same.
Foe Smiter: Increase to range 30", or make assault 4
Lion's Roar: Remove gets hot. Mastercrafted let's you reroll hit, but as far as I'm aware doesn't prevent gets hot. Potentially add blind.
Mace of Redemption: the only one I like. Give it smite mode for flavor.
Monster Slayer of Caliban: give the base level (roll of 1) strength +1, next level +2, final level +3 and AP 2, or even just on a 6 for the AP. Why pay 45 points for what's statistically going to be a +1 strength power sword more often than not?
Shroud of Heroes: worst of the bunch. Add eternal warrior, or make it FNP 4+, maybe even 3+. You're better off using an apothecary or the banner to get a 5+
In addition, some of the named characters could use better weapons, such as giving Azrael AP2. Why is Azrael's sword worse than Belial's and Sammael's?
