Subject: Equping Sergeants within Blood Angel and Space Wolf Squads

Hi Dakka,
I have a quick question in regards to this. I have a gaming group that interpretates this rule from the war gear sections of the Blood Angels and Space Wolf Codices as meaning the model can only have one weapon of each.
"A model may replace its bolt pistol and/or Melee weapon with one of the following:"
So essentially this is being interpretated to mean that my tactical Squad Sergeant can only ever have one Hand Flamer and not two. To be fair one of the players who has said this to me is a Space Wolf player and so he is bound by this same restriction. So he can't equip his models with two plasma pistols for instance using the same rule from the Space Wolf codex.
However I am aware that there a lot of players who are making lists that suggest otherwise. For instance I have read a lot of Blood Angels players suggesting the two Hand Flamer option and it was one that I was considering before the above was brought to my attention. So I ended up just giving my Sergeant the Combi-Flamer instead which is fine because it was a popular option as well.
So What do the people of Dakka think in regards to this?

Read the unit entry description before the unit entries themselves. GW defines and/or as meaning that you can replace Bolt Pistol with one of the following AND melee weapon with one of the following.
Two Hand Flamers is just fine.

This. It explains the and/or in the Unit Entries section

They are real fun until they shoot themselves in the face.
My dominion Sergeant has gone approximately 25 games without (that kind of) fatality. 3 Dangerous overheats though.... Praise the Power armour...

There is only the Emperor, and he is our shield and protector. But a well maintained suit of power armor definitely helps.

Also, keep in mind that you don't have to buy two of the same Pistol. You can buy a Hand Flamer and a Plasma Pistol and still fire both of them thanks to the Gunslinger rule. This actually comes in handy more often than you'd think.

Funny, since starting BA, only once has on of my sergeants survived. Every game they die to Gets Hot. I will never take away their plasma pistols.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Weird thing is, plasma guns and Canons always overheat and kill their bearers in my games...
Double plasma pistol, never.
It must be the Gunsligner-cool-looking-effect that trumps the "plasma always kill themselves" general rule....

Odd, as I've yet to have a plasma cannon or plasma gun get hot. Of course I haven't use plasma guns yet, so that might explain that one.

So just to clarify for myself.....
My Tac Sgt starts out being equipped with a Bolter and BP stock. I can then give him Chain sword for free (replacing the bolter). Can I then further replace that chain sword AND his bolt pistol with two infernus pistols? All within the scope of the rules? Just want to be able to justify my build to naysayers

You do not need to swap the bolter for a chainsword first ... you can drop the BP and Bolter and pick up double melta pistols.

You actually DO need to swap for a chainsword first as you have no permission to swap the bolter for a melta pistol.
But the end result is the same. Perfectly legal to dual wield melta pistols.

BA Codex: The Space Marine Sergeant or Veteran Sergeant may take items from the Melee Weapons and/or Ranged Weapons lists.
I cannot speak about the SW codex as I do not have it but the wording in the BA codex does not require a swap to a chainsword first.
If you look at the wording under ranged it says melee and/or BP. Nothing about Bolter. So you need to swap the bolter out first to be able to Gunslinger. (this is from the BA codex).
