Having played both, they're very different. Give me a little time to find my notes on the game from GenCon, then check my post for a major edit.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Alright, firstly, the pictures:
This first one shows off a selection of the commands you can use each turn.
The next one shows the bases to show off the firing arcs. The white bars in each arc has stats for that side and which dice type that side can use.
Third one shows the Range Ruler, which tells you which dice type you can use at what ranges. It also sneaks a peek at the flexible movement template for capital ships.
Commands are done via these plastic discs that you plan out ahead of time. Each ship has a command stat telling you how many discs you can use to plan out future turns.
Capital Ships have multiple speeds that you have to set ahead of time and which speed you're at determines how many clicks you can turn the movement template for turns. The bases have notches that the template fits into that you move along based upon your speed. Fighters use the flip side of the Range Ruler and can move wherever they want within that distance, emaning you can move sideways, in arcs, backwards, whatever, they're nimble like that.
There's 3 colors of dice with different amounts of hits and locks. There's also defense tokens that ships get access to such as the ability to re-roll defense dice, the ability to shunt hits from one arc to another(say, if your shields are down in that arc), halve damage, etc. You can use the Token then flip it. If you don't use it again, it resets at the start of turn, if you use it twice in a turn, you discard it and lose that ability for the rest of the game.
As noted on the first picture, they flipped movement and shooting from X-Wing. The game's much more about planning ahead and the action's a lot slower than X-wing. I wish I could give a better run down, but my notes were quick and reminding me while it was fresh for a rundown back then, so they're hard for me to remember why I wrote things in certain ways. The tables size recommended is 6'x3' rather than the 3'x3' area for X-wing.
Edit Again:
Not my picture, but shows better what I was talking about with the white bars. Shows the dice colors and numbers usable in that arc, the numbers in the circle are how many shields that facing has to start. The spinners keep track of your shields, obviously. You can also see the Defense Tokens in the back and the notch for the movement template on the base.
