So I've heard a lot of rumours over the years of the four chaos gods getting codexes, of the world eaters, emperors children, death guard and thousand suns getting supplements..but has anyone heard anything about those non mark specific legions? Iron warriors, night lords, alpha legion, word bearers etc, with the exception of the black legion I'd love to see some more insight into those chapters

I'm an Alpha Legion fan, and I would love nothing more than to actually feel like I'm playing alpha legion and not just chaos space marines

You only have to give everything a mark of khorne and take kharn or zhufor for it to feel like world eaters; typhus or necrosis, plague zombies, plague marines, Mark of nurgle to feel like death guard.

It's good to see Forge World bringing out Alpha Legion models, but this is why I play HoR Kill Team cause it actually feels like Alpha Legion!

'Straya... Mate.

just get heaps of cultists and paint a csm lord/csm as alpha marines. Ta daa! You have a alpha legion army.

Bring Cultists, make sure your only actual power-armoured CSM are Chosen or characters, and run a secondary summoning setup, it'll start feeling like Alpha Legion soon enough.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

To quote myself in a related thread. There's rumours of a Legion supplement coming out this year too.

According to most of the lore I see, the Alpha Legion doesn't really do the whole war thing, at least on a regular basis, and when they do, they seem to mostly just chuck hordes of cultists at people. Also, their commanding squad or leader never seems to be of too much importance, the whole hydra idea.

What sort of units in the CSM dex or from FW would be in a Alpha Legion list?

This is a very good question

These are the commonly played ones
  • 30k Adeptus Astartes codex

  • Imperial Armour 13

  • SM and IG codex

  • CSM codex

  • Back in the good ol' days, the Alpha Legion deployed wholesale and smashed stuff, but only after using loaded dice and having extra minis up their sleeves. Loads of stuff about that in the HH: Extermination book. So, if you want to roll a full-scale assault, the 30k list is pretty good.

The Imperial Armour 13 is based off the Siege of Vraks (which is about one of the very few Alpha Legion warbands invading Vraks) lists for Chaos Renegades, which includes a mix of CSMs and IG, essentially. This can be done with an SM and IG list as well, but it'll be less Chaos-y. These allow you a more 40k as opposed to 30k feel of maybe a few CSMs with a whole lot of units that are considerably better than Cultists, giving you the feel of elite Cultists lead by a few Alpha Operatives. Furthermore, using ForgeWorld Raptor tactics (available for free) with Lias Issodon (Raptor Chapter Master) with IG with a Master of the Fleet is another fun version, where the enemy's Reserve rolls get messed with doubly.

The CSM codex can be done as well, but it's generally not considered that suited for Alpha Legion. I run a Helcult formation (2x35 Fearless Cultists and a Helbrute) to boost my Cultists and making them useful, in addition to a few Havocs and CSMs, in addition to a Fallen Angel detachment with Cypher, with Huron leading the charge (so I can Infiltrate even more). I've just ordered 30 MKIV and an Alpha Legion Dreadnought from ForgeWorld though, as I'm working on being able to use a Deep Striking Mayhem pack, Deep Striking Learnean Terminators (still to acquire) and CSMs in a Dreadclaw (Still need to acquire a Dreadclaw), so my Infiltrating units can deploy, wait for the Deep Strikers, and hopefully take out the opponents army piecemeal.

Personally, I steer clear off Daemons, Obliterators/Mutilators, Forgefiends/Maulerfiends and Heldrakes, as I can't make them work in my mind, but that is a personal thing, probably due to me having played wh40k back in the 90's and I can't stand the newfangled things! I steer clear of Berzerkers, Thousand Sons, Noise Marines, Plague Marines etc too, but I wouldn't have a problem with Counts As at all.

Thanks for all that, that's a lot to consider and I appreciate it. It's be good if CSM had some kind of chapter tactics like SM. I mean I've been playing CSM for a couple years now, haven't played a 40k game in a while but plenty of HoR Kill Team. Their Alpha Legion rules gives all cultists Scouts, all your basic Astartes types Shrouded on the first turn and all Chosen get Infiltrate.
My KT list as it is is a Sorcerer, 5 Tacticals and 15 Cultists, it feels like Alpha Legion, a satisfaction I've never had with the full game regardless of how many cultists I take.

I know Horus Heresy has rules for them but I haven't been able to get around to having a look through them. I'm definitely excited about the two new models Forge World will be releasing, and I plan on purchasing the Alpha Legion Contemptor Dreadnought

I know they're probably the most difficult Legion to invent fluff for, without ruining too much mystery with the whole "apparently" and "may have been more than one person" kind of stories, but I'd love to see and read more about them!

Read the Serpent Beneath by Rob Sanders, it's the best wh40k story imho.

If you're more of an Alpha Legion SM player rather than Cultists, I'd run either the SM dex alone (ironically with UM tactics), the 30k list or maaaaaaybe the CSM list. I like the 30k list as it handicaps you a bit (if you lose more models than your opponent you lose VPs), but you gain a lot of flexibility

The Serpent Beneath is excellent, agreed. Also, the 30k rules for AL are really really cool. They represent the AL really well.
