How well do you know the rules of WH40k?
I have read the entire rule book and know it really well.
I have read the entire rule book but need to reference the rules for scenarios I rarely see.
I have read the rule book, but need to reference it often anyway
I have read most of what I feel is important and know the rules that my army uses.
I tried reading the rule book, but it was too boring so I learned only the rules I commonly use/see
I have learned the rules I know by playing with people who know the rules well.
let's be honest... I just make crap up and hope no one catches me.

Probably close to 95% for the core rules and the armies I own, maybe 50% (enough to know when my opponent is doing something wrong, intentionally or otherwise) for those I don't. Expansion-wise I'm pretty clueless as we've never really played them, but I get the basics (such as how Planetstrike works, PS/CoD Stratagems ect).

For the armies I own and play, I could probably throw together a list without using Battlescribe and including any unit I own in a few minutes and be pretty bang-on with the numbers, barring stupid mistakes.

Being the 'rules guy' for my group kind of ensures I know what I'm doing and have to!

I play 7th without using the rulebook, partly because I've never bought it.

Once I read a rule, it tends to stick in my head.

It's weird because I've been playing for many an edition now, but I've always wound up looking up a few things every game.

It's mostly the result of one of us coming up with some esoteric way out of a problem by using a backwards by-rule where you know the general rule and know there are some details to it that almost never come up... but it just came up.

That and I've played against a lot of rules lawyers before. There's no way of stopping them dead in their tracks like going to the actual rules and reading it to their faces.

I still often reference the rules in order to be sure about something. I've been playing since 2nd Edition, and sometimes it's hard to remember if the rule you're thinking of is from the current edition or not. Especially since 3rd-7th editions are really just the same game with minor changes between editions, so they all sometimes blur together.

Im terrible with rules in 40k. I know my codex, but I cant for the life of me remember the main rules. I know the obvious ones but there are so many odd rules I never seem to remember or even know exist.

I still remember rules from 4th edition (when I started) over 7th edition rules.

4 out of 5 games I don't need it for anything, outside of double checking some of the charts (I always forget perils, don't know why). That 1 out of 5 games it's usually something that I don't do very often. For example, since my only flyer is a nephilim I don't know flyer rules very well, and since I mostly run rhinos I don't see many opportunities to ram and such.

Also, I only just learned the rules for failing combats last week. DA are stubborn, so up until now I didn't know about the leadership penalty for losing combat. Luckily my opponents always did (I think).

Certain things I do not need to look up - To Hit, To Wound, most stat lines, what a bulk of the special rules do.

However, certain things I do look up just to make sure I'm correct as occasionally old editions creep back in.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I barely ever use buildings, so I have to look up the building damage chart inevitably.

That and since my hq slots are hogged by sanguinary priests, I barely have psykers anymore, so I only know 1 and 6 on perils without looking.

Ashamed to admit it, but I tend to forget about the rules a lot more than I should. Even sometimes the basic rules. It frustrated the hell out of an opponent in a tournament game once (even though he beat me), since my having to look things up slowed the game WAY down. Felt about 2 inches tall right then, I can tell you.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I forget the things that are in the Reference fairly often. How far Bikes move in Difficult Terrain, Perils charts, Vehicle Damage I always have to look up, and Zealot I've had to check up on just on the last game I played.

I've read it more than once but things like the Perils table (since I'm not used to using Psykers personally) or just anything I'm not 110% sure of I look up or have open just in case.
