Nottingham (yay!)

Okay, so my Word Bearers collection is coming together and in a few months I'll probably have a playable force. I'm currently painting up a Sorcerer, who I'm thinking about keeping cheap and simple with Lv1 and a Spell Familiar to summon packs of basic Daemons (or more) until his head explodes. He's probably not going to last long, so I figure there's little point in throwing 50pts at trying to get the juicier spells.

I'm not playing competitively, but I do like to get a decent return on my points. Anyone got recommended approaches for dabbling with the dark arts? How many dice do you risk? True believers or last-minute converts desperate for a Bloodthirster to bail them out all welcome

If you're going Word Bearers, you might look at the Crimson Slaughter supplement. There's a relic that makes him a Demon (and thus only perils on double-6's), though he can then only join units of Possessed.

Definitely look at Crimson Slaughter. The Prophet of the Voices relic makes him a Daemon and therefore much less likely to perils. I'd also go for Mastery Level 3 with him since if you want to summon things you need at least 3 successful warp charges to summon anything. You'll rarely be summoning anything if you only have one Mastery Level 1 psyker in your list. The best Daemon summoner CSM have access to goes something like this:

Sorceror: ML3, Mark of Tzeentch, Disc of Tzeentch, Spell Familiar, Sigil of Corruption (optional, but it does grant him a 3++ with MoT)

He's more costly than the guy you have in mind, but is much more likely to achieve his intended role. Not being able to join anything but Possessed sucks, but that's what the Disc (jetbike) is for. You can pop out, summon something in your opponents face, and then turbo boost to cover in the shooting phase. Being ML3 is good because it's A) more Warp Charges to manifest costly spells, and B) he can get more of the good stuff from Daemonology. The Primaris isn't bad (I'm usually perfectly happy summoning units of 5 hounds), but Incursion is wayyyy better. Being able to summon a unit of 3 Plague Drones (9 T5W between 3 Jet Pack infantry w/ Shrouded is awesome) or 3 Screamers (need an objective across the board? Here's about a unit that can turbo boost 24" the turn they are summoned) is just great.
