Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

As discussed in this thread, I'll be running a monthly painting competition on these forums from March onwards. Each month, there will be a vote for the theme, which will run for 2 days, and a subsequent vote at the end of the month for the winner (based not just on quality, but on effort, originality, progression and such as well).

So for the first month, the 4 options are:

Space Marines: We all got 'em, we all want 'em, whadda we do with 'em? Paint 'em, that's what! Anything SM related goes (this include all Chapters, GK, CSM, HH stuff and should you feel the need, Space Marines being killed by Xenos/Heretics )

Needs More Dakka: Guns, guns and more guns. If it's shooty, it goes, from gun-toting Ork Lootas to Infinity Nisse Snipers, via Battle Tanks and Gatling-gun-wielding-Samurai

Practice Makes Perfect: Try out an advanced technique, any mini with one or more of the following is elligible: Object Source Lighting, Non-metallic metal, weathering, Converting or Sculpting.

Veteran: You don't know, man, you weren't there! Your entry should look like it has been to hell and back in its relevant theatre of war

And just for reference, the rules of the challenge:

Spoiler:

- The challenge will run from the creation of the Challenge thread to Midnight GMT on the last day of that month.
- The winner will be chosen by an open poll. In the event of a tie, the relevant points will be awarded to each tying entrant
- The Winner will recieve 10 points, the 2nd place 8 points and the 3rd place 5 points. In addition, anyone who completes an entry but does not place in the top 3 will recieve 1 point.
- Points will be added to a league, which will track the overall score of each entrant.

How To Enter:

- You may enter up to FIVE models as a SINGLE ENTRY each month. Ideally, these should all be in some way related, such as being part of the same squad or regiment.
- Simply pick the models of your choice that fits the criteria (if you have any questions about eligibility, post or PM the thread creator). In general, I'll try and include anything that is at least in some way related to the month's theme.
- Post a Proof Picture of your model. This can be unassembled, built, primed, or basecoated a single colour. All entrants must submit a proof picture to be elligible for voting.
- Once you have completed your entry, you should post up to 4 final pictures IN THE CHALLENGE THREAD which will be used to show your entry in voting. You may also submit WIP pictures at any time, and should you be unable to finish your entry, the single most recent WIP will be submitted for voting.

Voting:
- All completed entries will be submitted for voting at the end of the month in a separate thread.
- When voting, take into account the effort, creativity, progression and suitability of the entry to the theme as well as the quality of paintwork.
- When the poll closes, relevant points will be awarded.

So, what do we reckon?

Or you could just go with an “all of the above” and do a veteran sternguard heavy weapon marine weathered as if tossed into a blender, toting a NMN plasma cannon giving off OSL.

I voted “space marine” selfishly, as I have a bunch primed and ready on the paint bench. Although if “veteran” wins, I’ll paint up an old RT captain.

This first contest will end on the 31st March, and if it goes well enough, the next one will start on the 1st April.

This poll will run for 2 days, so we will have the final results ready to go before the 1st March. Note that there will be a new thread for the challenge itself, this one is just for deciding what we paint.

Wait, we can enter 4 models per monthly competition?

Yeah, up 4 models as a single entry. Ideally they'd all be in some way related, so for example a Command Set for a fantasy regiment or from the same squad in 40k, it just adds a bit of flexibility, you obviously don't have to do that many.

Thinking about it, I might up it to 5, as that's usually the minimum squad size in 40k.

I think the squad thing is nice, gives some of us with less single-model-painting-contest-winning painting skills the chance to win over the vote by painting 4-5 nice models, in an attempt to push the whole entry to great, since maybe we couldn't paint one model to a superior standard.

It's also a good excuse to knock out chunks of armies or whole units

I voted Veteran because It'll give me the most choice from my large and varied model pool. If space marine is the category, I'm sure I can manage. Maybe even a dreadnought

I think it's pretty safe to say that marines will win this... Good thing I'm going to go to my FLGS soon!

I have 5 painted BA termies (not a legal build, but it does not matter in the games I play with my friends). Can I submit those?

@Matthew: It will end 2 days after it started, so about 3pm on Thursday GMT. Not sure what that will be where you are.

@Kaptain: I'm afraid not. To enter, you must paint something new after the challenge starts.

OK. Looks like I'm out. I'm too busy to paint. But it was pretty tempting to enter, I'll say that.

Once we're done with the poll, I'l create a new thread for the challenge itself, in which you can post your proof pic, the final models and any WIPs along the way. Of course, feel free to put them in your own blog or whatever too.

@OneManNoodles: Should Space Marines win, I'll accept anything that fits the definition of 'A Marine... IN SPAAACE!', so as long as it's at least somewhat related, then it's a good'un. For example, if someone wants to enter some Mantic Corpration Marines or an Ork in looted TDA, that's fine. Really, the more entries and wider variety we get, the better.

And Veteran is back in the lead. Didn't see that coming. If it's a tie, I'll open both categories.

Oh crepes, I had the best idea for Spess Muhreens.

Hey, Paradigm, if it's a tie, why not mix the two?

Well, your Space Marine idea could probably be adapted to the Veteran theme easily enough should that win!

I could mix them, but I think opening both might be better, it just widens the range of stuff we might see. You could still do a Veteran Space Marine, though, and be very relevant!

Here's another thought: What if whatever comes second in each poll goes onto the poll for the next month? That way, those that have plans for a certain thing might have more of a chance to enter it. So if Veteran wins this, one of next month's options will be Space Marines, alongside 3 new options?

Either suits me, seeing as I'm painting a Space Marine Veteran Company at the moment (and they're heavy on weathering as well, if that makes a comeback!)

Which reminds me, I assume no one would mind me entering as well? I mean, the results are decided by an open poll, so it's not like I can rig them or anything. If people would rather I stayed out as I'm running it then I will, but I'd like to take part if no one minds.

Because you need so much help getting motivate to get minis painted? I’m fine with you both running and participating, but if there is going to be any bribes, corruption, and/or graft, I want a cut.

Yeah I mean its not like this is a contest with prize support, and you aren't the sole judge of the challenge so I'm sure it's fine.

Do it.

You gotta up your P&M goal, maybe 500 this year?

Hah, at least this way I can be shown up by those out there that paint slower but much better than myself!

GrimDork wrote:

Hmm, at that point I might need to buy quite a few more minis. I can probably hit the 365 without spending all that much, but I'm not sure I could do 500 with what I have and a bit more.
