Okay so I don't know if you guys have already come across this yet but it'd be good to see what us modellers and painters ie people used to using colours and looking at photos think of this internet phenomenonum.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/what-color-is-the-dress-blue-and-black-or-white-and-gold-whatever-you-see-says-a-lot-about-you-10074490.html
My household is in a heated debate and it won't be long before someone loses their eyes, thus solving the problem.

Feel free to move to P+M as it's slightly painting related if you see appropriate.

I've looked at the same picture multiple times and it's always white/gold.

Me thinks there's a Photoshop doppelganger floating around out there.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

The answer is: the photo is poorly developed. Blue is blue, white is white, and gold is gold. Light can sometimes play tricks on our eyes, but for a photograph of a blue/black dress to appear white/gold, the photographer would have had to feth it up.

I'm sorry, but it's very clearly white and gold.

Definitely blue/black. I mean, damnit, if you invert the colours on Photoshop (ie. create a negative) you can get white/gold, so I have no bloody clue how people can see that from the original.

Its really simple:

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/02_04/black-and-blue-dress.gif

Its a cool brain trick.

http://brainden.com/color-illusions.htm

Nobody is wrong.

BUT seeing it as the correct colour will change how you see the original as your brain is corrected.

I didn't want to influence in the first post but I immediately saw it as a badly photographed blue and black dress.

It's indisputably blue/black, as other pictures of the same dress show.

As for what it looks like, to me it looks like dark gold and light blue, but mostly it looks like a picture with really bad white balance and exposure settings. So it's not surprising that people would see different colors in that picture, your brain is trying to correct for the obvious color distortion and has to make assumptions about what it is expecting to see. And the distortion lands right in the middle of ambiguous colors with no clear answer. Is it badly tinted white, or is it washed out blue? Is it gold, or washed out black? There's no clear answer, especially since you don't see enough background detail to figure out the correct compensation for the bad photography.

Nope. People who say the dress is gold / white are wrong. Hands down. The IMAGE of the dress, or rather that specific one, makes it look like it's white / gold.

Also, in case anyone doubts that it's blue/black, this is the dress with better photography: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roman-Womens-Detail-Bodycon-Dress/dp/B00SJEUCWU?tag=skim1x143739-21

But its not wrong to see white and gold is what I meant.

Infact you should see it as gold ish etc UNLESS you have seen the original which messes with how you see it.

Looks light blue with shiny brownish black to me. Horrible photography skills, shot taken into the lightsource.

The actual dress is blue and black. The image of the dress--which is what most people are referring to when they say "the dress", as opposed to the real piece of clothing itself--can come across as a different combination of colours due to science-y biology-y stuff.

Last night I couldn't sleep. I reached for my phone and opened facebook, and saw one of these posts immediately. I was utterly certain it was white and gold and had no idea how anyone could think otherwise.

I read some more stuff and went back to it, and was surprised that it was now clearly blue and black. Unambiguously. I spent the 20 minutes trying to figure it out. I could not see white and gold again.

This morning I woke up and checked immediately. It was white and gold, and I was like yeaaah, I'm not crazy. Then as I watched it, it became - as I was watching it - black and blue again.

I think it has to do with how awake & focused you are.

Or unless you recognize that it's a picture with bad exposure and white balance settings. The colors in the digital image might correspond to dark gold, but you can see it as "badly photographed black". That's what it looked like to me before I saw the better picture. There were goldish highlights on the black sections, but the poor photography was so obvious that I translated it to "washed out black", not "gold".

I think it was called white and gold for simplicity. If the original post had described it as washed out black and blue tinged white then I doubt many people would have payed attention.

Everyone I noticed saw described it as blueish white and darkish gold when not referring to it as white and gold. Which is what thew picture shows. But quick hand (and less descriptive) white and gold has caught on.
