Rousey finished her in 14 seconds...

What!

Ya, and it kind of sucks. A champion that dominant in a thin division is boring. Rousey vs Tate 3?

Holly Holm looked good, but is still a rookie in MMA. I think another fight or two and she'll be a contender.

Or Cyborg vs Rousey, if Cyborg can go down in weight, which is doubtful. If that were to happen though... biggest womens fight in history.

I was hoping for a good fight. Does suck.

There some good finishes, yep Koscheck choking on humble pie was cool.

Yeah rousey used her judo to create a scramble and take the back. The. A very nice transition to armbar.

Rousey has been training to be an Olympian then a figher from the age of 11. No one else in the divison is even close to that level of mat time and training.

I don't see holm having much to offer against Rousey. Holm is a better striker but I don't think her grappling is going to be any way up to scratch.

The real question is "what the feth was Zingano thinking?"

I just can't understand the rationale behind running wildly at a world class judoka. That's just begging to get tossed.

I thought Zingano could potentially give Rowdy some trouble on her feet, as Zingano's stand up game has, in the past, looked fairly solid. So much for that.

Zingano came out too aggressive, like Miesha Tate did the first time they fought. When Miesha came out a little more conservative the second time, she took Ronda to the deep waters, but still lost.

In other UFC news, Anderson Silva will admit to therapeutic PED use, and Brock was at UFC 184! Would love to see him back in the HW division, even if for just a few more fights, as he's 38.

Is there even a way to avoid her arm bar once she's in range?

Knives, firearms, pack of wild dogs and/or boars...the list goes on.

Yeah but there is no magic technique it's just a case of being a better grappler. No one currently in the UFC women's division is though.

Which is insane considering McMann was an Olympic Silver Medalist in wrestling. Rhonda is just so far above.

Thats still more relevant than Bellator and their Kimbo vs Shamrock... What a circus that will be.

The problem is that Olympic wrestling doesn't translate as well as something like Judo. Getting a take down is all well and good, but you have to be able to do something once you've got them down on the mat. I find a lot of wrestlers struggle with that.

Rouseys mother is a bronze medalist in judo as well cincey so rousey was being trained by an Olympian from a very young age.

I'm not sure I totally agree with you there steam. It's much easier to translate wrestling into takedowns for mma without a Gi.

Problem is wrestling has no real submissions where as judo has plenty (being the precursor to Bjj) so to make wrestling effective in mma you at the very least need some Bjj or sambo training to learn how to defend against submissions well. If you do that you can use wrestling to control person extremely well and get the fight to the ground when you want it.

Judo however needs work to translate Gi grips to no Gi grips but once you do that a hell of a lot of it transfers directly which I am hoping happens more and more in the future with people like Rousey showing how effective good judo can be. It's a real shame that the Ijf has constantly neutered judos rules removing a bunch of effective techniques from being used in takedown. Hell the double leg takedown is a technique in judo but you never see it in comp due to the no touching the legs rules now in judo.

I guess what I was trying to figure out is that Rousey has become so effective in her technique that, short of simply "being better than her" at her own game, is there some way an opponent can keep her away and still beat her?

I'm guessing no, because almost every fight eventually ends up as a close quarters ground fight.

Be good enough at stopping the takedown that they can stall and keep it on the feet and out strike her would be the best bet. Judo trips and takedowns can often come from places that are seen a little less often in wrestling so training your takedown defence against some decent judoka would be a great first step.

Essentially what you would want is some kind of sprawl and brawl game plan that focused on defending takedowns from the clinch rather than defending Against a wrestlers shoot.

Rousey is eliminating it from her game but she does still have a tendency to wade through punches to get the clinch. If you can spend as much of the fight as possible fighting like a long range fighter using lots of jabs to keep range, back peddling a little and you are able to defend the takedown from the clinch you stand a better chance against Rousey than anyone do far.

As a judoka myself (obviously not to the standard of Rousey lol) I've found the best way to withstand armlocks or strangles of any kind is to have them done on you repeatedly in training. This, for me and those I've worked with, helps you a) build up the flexibility/lung capacity to not break or drop unconcious immediately and b) teach you not to panic and how to deal with the situation.

While I'm not particularly experienced in MMA or UFC, I have done a fair bit of self-defense judo classes (both learning and a bit of teaching) which uses both kata and the Gokyo. Obviously its designed for defending yourself but part of that is going on the attack as well and with those sorts of situations being an expert judoka like Rousey will win every single time unless the opponent is equally skilled at judo. Kano designed judo to be used in any situation where you are within arm's reach, from any position and any judoka worth their salt can consolidate from one position to at least 3 others without thinking about it. And because of her superior judo Rousey automatically has the upper hand in any given fight. Get too close and she can go for a variety of takedowns. Charge towards her and she has a ton of moves ranging from Ogoshi to Makekomi to put you on the floor. And staying back will only lower your own confidence and prevent you from doing anything. Try to strike in any capacity will put you in striking range. The mentality of judo also translates well to UFC. If the opponent is fast and agile, slow them down and get them to either wear themselves out while conserving your own energy, and if they are more solid, slower paced, speed up and make them use more energy than necessary.

Anyway, went on a bit of a spiel but to me, Rousey's judo skills (not to say she can't do anything else) put her leagues above the competition. Not saying she can't be beaten, but if I were a gambling man I would never bet against her.

From the perspective of a practising judoka, budding coach and a referee (doing my National C level exam in April), damn straight what your saying about telhe disallowing of leg grabs and other changes to the rules. From a judoka's perspective, its irritating because you've spent significant time, sweat and effort perfecting these throws to be told they are no illegal. From a coaching viewpoint, you now have a bunch of throws you are required to teach to allow your students to advanced their grade, but are banned, and so just become a waste of time to teach if your students are competitive fighters rather than casuals or technicals. And from a refereeing point of view its just taking the goddam piss. From one competition to the next you have to more or less relearn all the rules because they change so much, and what would have been a winning throw last week you now must disqualify the guy because he grabbed a leg on instinct or did something minor like use a Sode (double sleeve) grip as his default grip, which he's been doing for 10+ years, get a shido because you may only use the lapel+sleeve grip unless you immediately make an attack. As a referee, it can be really disheartening to explain why he's not getting his 2nd Dan because his go-to throw just got him disqualified.

I am no judoka. Only had a few classes in it but I am going to look into training as soon as I get some stuff sorted in my personal life and am settles down living somewhere so I can train often. Gonna focus more on grappling than striking going forward because after a head injury I need to be more careful with head strikes.

I really hope freestyle judo takes off in a big way going forward, especially if no Gi judo tournament a come as part of the package.

come on now that's crazy talk. Hands down the single best base to have coming into MMA is wrestling and it's not even close. If an opponent is on their back not a whole lot they do to create damage. Sure they have submissions and sweeps but a good wrestler who has cross trained isn't falling for that.

I beat Kung Fu on the original NES, and with that wealth of experience, I see no way that anyone in the current Women's division can beat her in the next few years. Bethe Correira is probably next, she has beat most of Ronda's hanger-ons, but they are rank amateur and Bethe has nothing new to bring to the table. After that, maybe a resurgent McMann.

Hollywood paychecks will knock her out of the fight game before any woman does.

Edit: Cyborg if they make it catchweight, could have a chance. Don't think she's able to get down to 135.

Yes, and emphatically.

He has enough people that dislike him that there is going to be some NSFW photoshops of it as well. Like Dan Hardy said, if anyone likes Josh Koscheck, its because they never met Josh Koscheck.

Conversely, watching Mark Munoz's soul damn near leave his body while being choked out literally right in front of the ref was sad and frightening. That ref needs to be fired.
