Subject: Thinking of Starting Black Templars

Hey mates. I am currently in the process of gathering an Imperial Fists Legion for my 30k army for the Horus Heresy Campaign that is going on with my group of friends. However for 40k, despite the fact that they are now part of the regular Codex, I have always and will always be a huge fan of the Black Templars, but I really don't know how much they have changed really and how they play in this new edition, as a of people who have played them seemed to have dried up and vanished. So basically, for the Black Templars in this new edition:
* How well do they play with there current Codex?
* What are some effective Army Lists to run with the Black Templars?
* Do you run your Templars from the Regular Marine codex or do you use one of the others for your army list? Such as Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Sentinels of Terra, etc?
* Or do you use a different Chapter Tactic with your Black Templars? Such as the White Scars, Imperial Fists, etc.
Appreciate all of the help mates.

My younger brother plays Templars as his main army. Crusader allows you to run with 2d6 and pick the highest, Adamantium will gives you deny the witch on a 5+ base if you are the target.
These are probably the swarmiest of marine armies, but play it well will vets and vanguard mixed in with crusader squads pouring out of Land Raiders.

Don't forget that Crusader adds D3 to your sweeping advance rolls! That really helps against most xenos players, and chaos in the cases where they aren't fearless.
Kavik_Whitescar got a lot of the basics down. One of the things you have to know is that sadly their special characters and Emperor's Champion leave a lot to be desired, and its generally better if you just make your own character or chapter master built out with the relics you generally have access to.

I play them with the Executioners CT. They get a. Immunity to Ld manipulation, and get ID on a to-wound roll of 6 in a challenge.
I've also seen them played with the new BA rules, with a build based around Gabriel Seth. He was played as a high marshal.

Rule #2 is Do Cool S*%* Even If It's Tactically Inadvisable

I have played them quite a bit in 6th, and a few games in 7th as the actual Black Templar tactics.
I have found that each of my lists probably would have benefited from the Iron Hands CT better than the Black Templar. But for awhile I was making use of the 5-man las/plas crusader squads. Black Templar are the only marines that can field 5 marines, one with a heavy and one with a special weapon.
But I have been considering running them either as blood angels or with blood angel allies. Since Blood angels get so much close combat goodness, and have an apothecary HQ.
But if you want to run BT as the BT chapter, they can make use of Land Raider Crusaders as dedicated transport. An objective secured land-raider is a hard thing to move. Also their characters are great in challenges so getting in to close combat is always helpful. Rolling on strategic warlord traits to get the infiltrate rule is good. Running an inquisitor with the liber heresius item to give a land-raider scout on the first turn is also good.
But from a competitive standpoint, their CT are subpar. Iron hands are good, white scars good. A biker Black Templar army would still make some sense fluff wise. its still fast and assaulty.

BT lost some goodies during codex transition, but as compensation gained all the toys the codex marines have at their disposal.
Also when you look at the relics our HQs now have access to, I daresay the new Templars are actually stronger than the old ones.
You can actually play shooty Templars now without them being a joke.

Thanks for the replies so far. However at this moment I am planning on running my Black Templars as a Drop Pod list, as I have always been a fan of a Drop Pod Assault Army and I think it would fit the Black Templars fluff still pretty easily. The question is however, is should I stick to the regular Black Templar chapter tactics or would I be better off running out of another codex or even using another chapter tactic. The other Chapter Tactics/ Codex's that come to mind are the Salamanders, the Sentinels of Terra Imperial Fists supplement, the Space Wolves or the Blood Angels Codex to represent my Templars. Thoughts?

Any of the other marine chapters can do Drop pods better no reason to run BT for that.
The real bread and butter for them is the crusader units.
If you have no issue with CT hopping then for a drop list, salamanders, SoT or even smurfs work decently as they all have benfits to weapons in range.
I think FW had a decent drop CT as well.
