hi was wanting to get some opinions on plywood bases. I'm changing out bases on my necrons to 32mm bases. plywood bases from http://www.litko.net/ are cheaper then plastics from GW.
thoughts?

they work fine, a base is a base really

They work fine, They're a little light, so you may consider adding weights to the bottom, but overall they work fine.

Personally, i like that the plastics aren't fully flush with the table. It allows more textured surfaces. The flush bases wobble more.

Yeah, having a full flat surface, any irregularity or bump that sticks up makes the whole thing sit strange.
The outer perimeter of the base only touching allows it to avoid bumps easier.
I find the outer edge also bites-in better so less likely to slide.

What the folks say above is true, but if you're switching to the larger 32mm size and dealing mostly with plastic figs, tipping on uneven terrain isn't going to be a big worry. I've got alot of units based on wood and MDF, but it's mostly larger things like 10mm Mecha ( on 45mm hexes) and such.

If the savings are notable, I'd definitely go with plywood or MDF bases. The only thing I'd add is to paint and varnish the bottoms of the bases. Wood bases can absorb moisture so it's best to avoid the possibility.

What do you use to attach models to wooden bases. Is it just a case of varnishing the hell out of them and supergluing to the surface of that?

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Don't varnish the top before attaching the figures. Superglue will bond all kinds (metal, plastic, resin, vinyl, etc ) of figs to wooden bases as well as (often better than) to plastic bases.

The varnishing and painting I mentioned was to the bottom (and possibly the edges) of the bases to seal any exposed wood.
