Khorne Lord with Axe of Blind Fury delivery system is popular. As is Nurgle Biker Sorceror bodyguard.

They are fantastic in 2 major ways.

1) As extra wounds to escort a fast hard hitting character.

2) Cheap, durable, fast distraction units. A spawn unit is fast, has a lot of durability for the pts, and hits just hard enough they cannot be ignored. If you throw a few units of spawn at your opponent they will either cause a mess of the opponent's plans or let you get other scary stuff in for the kill.

They're pretty self explanatory. They are really good at rushing into the first thing they can get to and either tying it up or killing it.

They are okay at that. They are actually even better at controlling the battlefield. If you take 3 units of minimum spawn, either naked or MoN they are pretty cheap and small enough that they can skirt around and inside terrain. You can use their 12" movement, relatively small profile, and their ability to damage or tie up most targets to limit your opponent's mobility and knock units off of objectives (and even score them yourself). Spawn are not one dimensional units. Nothing with that much mobility and decent durability for the price is ever going to lack tactical use.

BTW the spawn in the Renegades and Heretics army list are god-like. They are objective secured, cheap as chips, but loose the marks. Which means you are forced to use them tactically and you quickly come to realize that spawn even in the CSM codex are a highly useful tool.

Some Tomb World in some galaxy by that one thing in that one place (or Minnesota for nosy people)

Toss a AoBF juggerlord in them and toss Invis onto them from Be'Lakor or other sources and you have a cheap deathstar thats a pita to deal with (but not overly difficult).

Spawn are great for LOS wounds for your HQs, and charging Shooty units, or assault units you don't want your own units to be evaporated from.

Spawns are so good you shouldn't need no advice to start using them effectively.

Definitely need a beat stick in them as mentioned above. Otherwise you end up with a humble dreadnought tying them up in combat or find terminators sat in a objective secured landraider winning the game.
MoN is a no brainer.
The biggest problem is they camp in the FA slot and compete with drakes and bikes for a position (or you pay cultist tax and get a second CAD).
The distraction value of them is brilliant. Consider running them with CSM packed into rhinos; maybe two of them. If all goes according to plan you will have your CSMs bailing out of the rhinos and shooting up your opponents immediately before your spawns, bikes and maulerfiends get to assault.
