I... actually don't know. Help?

According to Lexicanum, every company in a chapter keeps it's own motorpool of vehicles, including METAL BAWKSES and Razorbacks.
Does anyone know a set number? Or does it differ between chapter and chapter?
Also, is the 1st company the only one with Land Raiders?
And how many Bikes, Attack Bikes and Land Speeders does the 6th and 7th companies have?

It varies pretty wildly actually. Both depending on the chapter's ability to replace vehicles, as well as their preferred method of combat I would think.
I don't remember all the numbers off the top of my head, but IIRC the Ultramarines have 14 land raiders while the Blood Angels have 43.

Regarding overall numbers of tanks, Insignium Astartes sayeth this:
"A typical Chapter may own several hundred main battle tanks such as the Predator and Land Raider. More usually a Chapter will number twenty to thirty Predators and as many Land Raiders amongst its available war machines."
The 3rd edition codex had the most extensive writeup ever given to a chapter, naturally the Ultramarines. They had 21 Land Raiders: 2 in the Chapter HQ (reduced to 1 in the 5th edition codex), 12 in the armoury (armoury numbers copy-pasted into the 5th edition codex) and 7 in the 1st companies transport pool (omitted from the 5e dex). Of the entire chapter the 4th company was the only company at full strength, it's vehicle pool (excluding Dreadnoughts) comprised 15 Rhinos, 5 Land Speeders, 5 Land Speeder Typhoons, 5 Land Speeder Tornadoes, 25 Bikes and 5 Attack bikes.
In theory the entirety of the 6th & 7th companies should be able to deploy on Bikes & Speeders, the aforementioned writeup gave the Ultramarines companies however actually gave them less than a battle company (the Battle Company numbers however have an excess, so it could be that reserve companies will use the vehicle from the pool of the Battle Company they are supporting).

The BA codex lists the fleet, and the exact number of all vehicles in the chapter except that it doesn't mention rhinos, razorbacks, speeders, drop pods, or bikes of any kind.
Apparently we only have like...half a dozen whirlwinds and vindicators though. So like when you field two, there's only like four elsewhere in the galaxy. o.o

When you field 100 Blood Angels, there's only another 900 in the entire galaxy, so that's hardly unreasonable in perspective.

These numbers make me sad. Do you guys think GW will ever buff up Chapter numbers to 10k each? They went back and buffed up Legion numbers after all. They were originally only something like 10-15k each if I remember correctly.
But then Legion numbers would need to be buffed up again or they'd be entirely unimpressive. Hmm...

A lot of 40k originates from Epic, Space Marines for example have always been organised into 10 companies of 100 men, but it was Epic that gave us the modern composition (altho the actual squad numbers have altered slightly), so I'm a bit irked by any numbers that down't allow at least a couple of Epic squadrons, also whenever they give Thunderhawk numbers they are always only a fraction of what they should be according to Epic & BFG.
The Legion numbers were in effect reset, they were originally stated to be tens of thousands strong, somewhere along the line they dropped the plural, then when they revisited the old fluff they decided to up the numbers again as well as reverting to the old spelling of Isstvan in lieu of the newer Istvaan.

I know what’s cannon and what’s not is a very fuzzy topic with GW, but web bundles put together by the sales team I think are going to be low end on the “official” scale. Not that that pic/bundle doesn’t make for a nice snapshot of what a chapter could field, but they mix a lot of company/chapter level assets.

Well considering it is the only "official" full picture we have, I agree that it is a good snapshot. It doesn't have things like thunderhawks and stuff either.

IIRC there was a picture of the full chapter of Ultramarines built and painted in the 2nd/3rd edition era. Might be able to get a glimpse from that. Horribly out of date, but another datapoint.

Plus all the command staff etc, guys who, for some reason, don't get counted in that 1000. In BA that's 30 SG, 20ish priests, 30ish librarians of varying ranks, like 15 chaplains, 10? Command squads, and like 15-20 dreadnoughts. Plus vehicle drivers!
And then there's the matter of an unknown number of death co. at any given time.
Granted going up a couple hundred guys from 1000 isn't much, but I like semantics!

The debate on the 1,000 man chapter crops up from time to time. Is it the line strength (10 companies of 10 squads of 10 men) or the total strength. On topic to this thread, who drives all the vehicles is one of the hot issues. If you count all the drivers, gunners and other associated support personnel, you chapter clocks in closer to 1,500 then 1k.

I think it clear that the intent was to reduce the power of any astartes organisation to a single chapter. A chapter still needs supporting services so as long as they're not rivalling an IG armoured regiment I don't think anyone cares too much. Black Templars get away with it because they're not a unified force, they're split into smaller groups so technically they're not breaking the intent of legion break-up.
In 5th they added 50 marines into the armoury under Chronus, that's not there in 6th but it sounds like a good concept to keep.
If your reserves are manning all the vehicles, then they're not much use as reserves.

I have always seen it as 1000 active marines, rest are support staff (permanently injured etc.) or novitiates or scouts.
