All
Can you take a platoon command squad with veteran squads, or can they only be paired with regular/conscript squads? Also, what is the preferred loadout for Leman Russ tanks?
Thanks in advance

The Platoon Command Squad is part of the Infantry Platoon (which is composed of multiple units). The Infantry Platoon tells you what you are allowed to take.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I'd assumed as much but had seen a list from the LV open that had platoon command squads but did not seem to have the requisite number of regular squads to justify the number of command squads taken. Thought I was missing something.

It may have been a "Company Command Squad" which is similar to a "Platoon Command Squad" except that it's an HQ choice... more orders... more Wounds on the Commander... more upgrade options... just plain better.

As for Russes, assuming a stand-alone unit of 1, my suggestions would be:

150 - LRBT - Hull HB: Ordnance ruins your other guns' accuracy. Don't spend the extra points.

175 - LR Exterminator [Generalist] - Hull Lascannon, 2x Plasma Cannons, Heavy Stubber: Good at taking on Light / Medium vehicles. Good at killing all types of infantry.

160 - LR Exterminator [Anti-Vehicle] - Hull Lascannon, 2x Multi-Melta: Good at hurting Deep Strike Vehicles, like Dreadnaughts. Best Russ for Secondary Role as anti-flyer.

175 - LR Vanquisher [Generalist] - Hull LC, 2x PC: Fantastic for hunting elite infantry, monstrous creatures, and Light / Medium vehicles. You've got Lasguns for hordes.

165 - LR Vanquiisher [Dedicated Anti-Vehicle] - Hull LC, 2x MM: Ok at hunting elite infantry, Monstrous Creatures. Quite capable of cracking high AV vehicles.

160 - LR Eradicator [Cheap and effective Generalist] - LC, 2x PC: Truly Jack of all Trades. Only 10 points more than a LRBT. Great at killing hordes [even in cover!], better at killing elite infantry than an LRBT, enough shots to make a decent Light to Mid AV hunter.

170 - LR Demolisher - Hull HB: Ordnance ruins your other guns' accuracy. Don't spend the extra points.

165 - LR Punisher - Hull HB, 2x HB, Heavy Stubber: Dedicated infantry killer. How many saves can you make?

185 - LR Executioner [No Preferred Enemy] - LC, 2x MM: Elite infantry killer, with Anti-Vehicle secondary role. Without Preferred Enemy, you'd burn yourself to death from overheat rolls, or at least not be able to fire as much as you should due to 1's stopping the shot, even without damage.

195 - LR Executioner [Preferred Enemy Generalist] - LC, 2x PC: Ultimate solution to 2+ Saves. Less efficient the more "hordey" your target gets, but still good because you'll get lots of hits. Quite decent at taking out light / medium vehicles due to number of shots.

As Russes are Heavy, and thus move VERY slowly, I prefer to take Generalist choices, so that they're good no matter what targets my opponent gives to me. To put a point on it, you move too slow to pick your targets, your targets are whatever your opponent leaves in front of you.

Tree, thanks for your input. The Vanquisher generalist is what I was thinking but given my tendency to throw 1s, I've always been iffy on plasma weapons.

I will point out that Pask in a Punisher can be brutal for mech armies. 20 shots, hitting on a 3+, rerolling 1s, with Rending and the ability to reroll failed armour pens, can take out a land raider in 2 turns.

I generally take "naked" basic Russes & Demolishers.

IMO, the basic Russ does fine with the hull HB, but most other IG tanks are just fine (or better) with the hull HF. I don't take hull LC.

I almost always take the Relic that gives Preferred Enemy on my CCS, and I try to keep long ranged Russes nearby. It's essentially an upgrade to give everything nearby BS 3.5 , and the rerolling of 1's to wound is awesome with Plasma and the like, that usually wounds on a 2+. Really, anything S 6+ gets the equivalent of Shred, in most cases.

That works with the idea of a sit'n'shoot section, in that you don't get to choose your target, so I want to use weapons like Plasma that are good against nearly everything. At least useable.

So if you're worried about 1's on plasma you can rock Pask, though in the edition of "Allies Everywhere" he's not as good as I've seen him claimed to be, since you pick a Faction to gain Preferred Enemy against, and it's only his unit... If he's the Warlord. The Relic [Kurov's Aquilla, I think] gives PE to everything nearby, not just one unit, and the bearer doesn't need to be your Warlord. That's good, because he should draw a lot of attention.

If you are going with Pask, there's little reason to NOT take him in a Punisher. Gear his sponsons to match whatever his squadmates will be running, since the Rending Punisher is good against EVERYTHING.
