There are around 30 techmarines in a chapter based on the Ultramarines chapter. Some of them are used to fire weapons, some are always on Macragge. Are basic marines allowed to fix rhinos, preds etc if they break down or something goes wrong with them?
There obviously aren't enough techmarines to go to every place vehicles are sent so what happens to them when they stop working? Can servitor work on their own, can marines do basic repairs - I recall that only those recognised by the Martian Priesthood are allowed to do anything to machines, or is that just the more advanced technology that applies to?

Techmarines probably won't maintain every vehicles and fliers, neither on the field nor in the chapter keep.

Servitors are the way to go. I say this because we know for a fact they are used to assist techmarines in their duties. So if a techmarine has 5 servitors, pre-programmed to maintain 5 types of vehicles, that's almost 5 times more vehicles a techmarine can maintain alone (presuming the servitors aren't to dense). And all the techmarine needs to do is maintaining that 5 servitors. Of course he will still need to oversee the maintenance, but that's less time for more work done.

Servitors needs a techmarine/priest to be around, lest they become mindlocked. I think the fluff reason is that somebody has to switch the program on the servitor's waffer, probably remotely, but I'm not sure.

Also for maintenance, if the Martian Priesthood forbids unsanctioned personnel from trying to fix they machinery, servitors are clearly sanctioned (since on TT servitors with Servo-arms can fix vehicles); also Guardsmen, for practical purposes, are allowed to disassemble their lasguns and attempt to fix them, provided the correct incantations are uttered while doing so.

There probably are enough Techmarines to go around actually. At any given time I would say most chapters are rarely, if ever, involved in more than say 3-4 separate engagements at once. You only need enough Techmarines for one (along with his servitors) for each engagement.

consider, if we assume a chapter has 30 tech marines that's eneugh for 3 per company. Presumably you'd have 2 Techmarines accompanying each company and then you'd basicly have 10 on hand as "spares" for when they're needed.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Basic marines = basic repairs.
Top level marines = top level repairs.

The majority of supportive actions seem to happen "off-screen". 40k is treated like a movie. You get to know the fighting but the daily duties aren't so "narrative" worthy and thus left out IMHO.

Space marine vehicles are based on reliable STC tech. Easy to maintain, self repairs (rhino) , pretty compatible ( a lot of the variants are just a different load out in guns ).
....and the Marines are trained in every aspect of the Chapter, so using all its gear and maybe basic repairs and maintance too.
The crew doesn't need to be able to fix everything. To Mobilize an immobilized tracked vehicle is possible without years of training for example.
A lot of gear isn't a 100% loss in battle. Vehicles shot down could be recovered. Or just parts of it.
Chapters have serfs and servitors, transports and Tech-marines to control the process. I'd put the valuable Techmarine above the simple duties of repairing everything himself.
The "basic" Space marines could keep their gear going until the Techmarine is needed. Weapon jammed? Don't call the Techmarine,Just fix it. Barrels overheated and twisted? Call the Techmarine and prepare for punishment.

The vehicle crews that work for the Armoury aren't full-fledged Techmarines but they can keep their vehicles running when necessary.

Mainly depends on the damage.

At the basic level, I'd say the Marines themselves, and/or serfs.
Higher-level repairs are propably done by servitors/serfs overlooked by techmarines.

So you reckon marines would be taught basic engine repairs, or IG for that matter. It's hard to work out what control the mechanicum has and what can and can't be done with various systems.
