So I'm new to the game and have picked up Icestorm, got the N3 rules with the bounty hunter and the painting guide with Joan Darc, decided I'm going to go with PanO.
Any top tips, really like the knight models and the Neo terra Bolts.
Going to order the cosplay neo terra bolt but am only just starting to read through the rules so my model choices are based on what I like and so many!

Many of us chose factions based on the models we liked he look of - there's no shame in that.
I started out about 7 years ago with panO. This was followed by JSA, Aleph, QK and nomads, and recently, morats/combine.
Still following the "models I like the look of" doctrine. If you like them, you are more likely to want to see them painted up.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

Thanks,
If I my 40k tastes as a baseline I paint up what catches my eye but tend to keep within the legal army framework.
I like adriana but already have panO so that seems a good place to start.

Infinity is different to 40k in that while 40k has a lot of very bad units and a few very, very good units, meaning army selection is fairly limited, Infinity has very few, if any, outright bad units. There's units people consider situational, and some that are outclassed, but they themselves aren't actually bad. Taking them won't lose you a game.
So picking a faction, and picking units from within that faction based on aesthetics is a perfectly valid way to collect an Infinity army.

I just picked up the Neoterran-capitaline-army box for my friend and it's a pretty good start after the O:I stuff.
Three Bolts, a sneaky Hexas, one power armoured Aquila Guard and a super-scary power armoured Swiss Guard.
Not strictly knights, per se, but I think that they look rather cool.

As to general list-building theory it's useful to have linebreakers that can manoeuvre without taking too much reaction fire, MSVs to counter the other guy's linebreakers, things that can crack heavy armour, and enough mobile specialists to play scenario games, but given the number of units that can fill those roles it turns out a lot of different things can go in your army. It's usually better to start with the core list and decide to go for sectorials later simply because you lose so much flexibility chopping off half the army list; you can easily run Knights and Bolts in the core list. You're capped to one of each kind of Knight and only three Bolts but that still leaves you a lot of wiggle room. Infinity's not a game that's easy to theorycraft the way Warhammer is; I'd suggest getting to some baseline level of redundancy and playing as much as you can and getting a feel for how the game works and how you like to play it.
(Also remember always that it costs you all of two points to make one of those Fusiliers a FO or a paramedic; they will save your life one of these days, don't hesitate to do it)

It may come as a surprise coming from 40k, but basic infantry (in your case, Fusiliers) with standard combi rifles are actually worth taking, unlike 40k which forces you to take troops because otherwise there's no reason to. They provide regular orders, which can be used by other models, and can be deployed to watch vulnerable approaches to shoot enemies in reaction. These are otherwise known as 'cheerleaders'. Basically, they stand back and let your more punchy dudes get on with the killing. You'll be unlikely to actually activate them to do anything, but the fact that they're there helps you significantly. If, as said above, you pay a single point and make them Forward Observers, they're also fantastic backup objective grabbers if your primary specialists get killed.

ids1984 wrote:Thank you. So any general rule of thumb must haves in an army? I beleave the knights are in short supply? I'd recommend getting basic DroneBot remotes. Sierra and Pathfinder. Sierra is a total reaction REM which comes handy for controlling specific angles or objectives. Pathfinder on the other hand is very useful all-round fast chassis specialists. I take two Pathfinders and haven't regretted it thus far. There are mixed view on Support box. I can understand the negativity, we have the worst specialists in the game. However, because missions put greater emphasis on a doctor and an engineer I find the flexibility they offer in various scenarios to be worth it. I know some of PanO players don't like picking support and you can definitely play only profiles with FO or hacker but I'd miss the flexibility that comes with other specialists. The new classified mission test run (engineering roll) is ridiculously easy to achieve, if your force includes REM. Not to mention what a pain it is to put REM down in N3, if there's an engineer present. I'm not a fan of Knights, they tend to be durable and shoot well, but are fairly dull in their nature. Official missions generally encourage certain profiles and larger order number, which makes some units in high demand and others not so much. Joan should work well with Bolts, simply because you'll want to push them more towards objectives. Having some synergy is always good to have.

This has been one of the most useful threads, thankyou.
The models I've got now are the Icestorm models and joan on the way.
Most of you seem to know my tastes more than me! What would be a good way to expand into 300pts for a vanilla force.
