It is with immeasurable sadness that we announce that author Sir Terry Pratchett has died.

The world has lost one of its brightest, sharpest minds. Rest in peace Sir Terry Pratchett

Simply dreadful news, his books were a delight.

Hopefully the Nightwatch will report for duty a little bit early tonight so that they can raise a glass / tankard to his passing

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

It helps that his work is left to brighten it up.

There's always one of his books at the side of the bed.

Sad news, but not wholly unexpected. I think I have almost every book he's written, but have not read more than a quarter of them. I hope Death made room for him on Binky.

No more pertinent remarks from Nobby Nobbs.

Or quotables by Vetinari.

'As they say, "If you would seek war, prepare for war."'
'I believe, my lord, the saying is "If you would seek peace, prepare for war,"' Leonard ventured.
Vetinari put his head on one side and his lips moved as he repeated the phrase to himself. Finally he said, 'No, no. I just don't see that one at all.'

Well, it's not so sad for him. He had Alzheimer's, and dying before that monstrosity sets in is a release more then anything else.

Sir Terry Pratchett died as Sir Terry Pratchett, and not as an empty husk of flesh devoid of complex thought or emotions.

I just heard about this a minute ago. I'm still sort of in shock. He was, without a doubt in my mind, the best modern-day author there was or will be.

Let us just hope his death spoke in capital letters.

It would appear it did. The announcement on Twitter:

AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER

Terry took Death's arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night.

The End.

That's twice now that I've been relatively sanguine about a passing, until I read someone's last tweets. - Then it starts to get to me.

As devastating as his passing is for the literary world, I have to agree. Better for him to go out while he is still in control of his own faculties.

I found Pratchett's work in my late teens, and I'm still expanding my collection of his books. It's a shame the world will never get another Discworld novel right from the mind of the original author.

This is really the first time that the death of someone I haven't personlly known has brought me to tears.

I met him at a few book signings in the early 00s. At the time, Discworld still wasn't big in the US, and there weren't many of us at what were often small bookshops.

The last time, though, must have been after he 'broke through' - it was at Borders, and there was quite a line. He still remembered the few of us that had been at the smaller shops.

I remember, as a teenager, pestering my UK relatives to send me his books, because we couldn't buy them easily in the US.

I'm glad that, by all appearances, he got to choose how he went.
