Unlike an Ethereal he can invoke 2 powers each turn instead of one, and most importantly of all (the main reason why you take him) is that in addition to the 12" LD10 bubble, his grants Tau units across the entire game board the ability to re-roll failed morale, pinning, fear and regroup tests. This means outflanking pathfinders, backfield broadsides, deepstriking crisis suits and firewarriors aboard devilfishes all benefit from this, regardless whether they have line of sight to him of not. This is immensely valuable for any large games, where as a Tau player you can now almost guarantee that none of your units will run off the board. This might not sound like much on paper, but in practice this can often decide games.

Aun'Va technically isnt bad, his rules are solid and he's cheap.

Problem is he is hella squishy and almost impossible to protect. He is NOT an IC so the only protection he has is his two guards that are your typical T3 weakling. He's Bulky/Extremely Bulky(forget which) so he cant hide in a devilfish like an Ethereal can, and his staff save is easy to bypass since he has no armor (hit with AP5/6/- weapon, hes in trouble) and it counts as a Cover Save so ignore cover just removes it entirely.

If his special save wasnt a cover save, or he was able to join a unit for protection, i'd say hes a damn good pick especially if youre going heavy on firewarriors. As it is, even a notice player can take him out with ease.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

actually they have 5+ armour saves and can claim cover saves as well

Funny I always thought the Paradox of Duality was an FNP save, since it states "When Aun'Va's unit suffers one or more unsaved wounds from a shooting attack", i.e. you roll the save after the shot goes through, even though it afterwards says "exactly as if a cover save had been passed"

There have been a few YMDC threads on this point. Not sure which way it fell out. Pairiing him with a Tank'mander makes for a silly tough nut to crack as you are pretty much always saving at a 2+.
