As I read it, the shield with the upgrade allows a Flier with the Skimmer subtype start the game on it instead of starting in reserves. And if the Skyshield is in the "shielded" position everything on it benefits from a 4++ invulnerable save, so the Stormraven has a 4++ invulnerable save for as long as it is on the Skyshield Landing Pad. It could just sit there for the invulnerable save until the enemy fliers came on to the board and then use its next turn to change flight modes and fire on the flier with its full BS. Right?

Yes, that's correct.

That's the point of the Skyshield, if you couldn't do that it'd have to be called something else.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the skyshield being in the "shielded position" prevent flyers from starting on it?

I thought that the shields had to be down to start a flyer on it. Am I imagining this?

The Upgrade reads: "Ready for Takeoff: A Skyshield Landing Pad can be upgraded to have this special rule. When deploying your army, you can deploy one of your Flyers with the Hover type on top of each of your Skyshield Landing Pads that has this upgrade, even though Flyers normally have to start the game in reserves. Flyers that deploy in this way start the game hovering and cannot Zoom in the first game turn."

Nothing about Shielded or Unfurled position. You may have been thinking of Deep Striking units not scattering when arriving on an Unfurled Skyshield.

That's probably what I was thinking of.

That's the fluff. It lowers the shield for them to land. Then raises them again once they're down.

But actually suggesting using a landing pad to land a flyer!?! This has never happened before...
Normally they're packed full of tau suits.
