Hi guys!

I'm new to dakka, so please bear with me!
I was thinking about starting my own paint theme, but was wondering how to achieve two things.
The first is the glossy/textured/rippled (???) effect of the black and red on these figures respectively?

Please note - one of the pictures in the links are taken by myself nor do the objects in question belong to me!

In addition, I was wondering how to acquire the tetris/lego effect.
Again, please have mercy on my ignorance.

Finally, and possibly most importantly, I was hoping for feedback on my notion.
In regards to the tau, do the armour predominantly black, with a fraction of the "scales" red (first form).
Then in regards to the the cloth, do the majority varying tones of grey, with the occasional spot of gold/bright yellow (second form).
This would also be same colour as the insignia.
Finally, I was hoping to make the eyes look like a jewel (deep darkish blue, to stand out from the black) with lighting effects in light blue, equivalent to the green in this link.
Again, if anybody knows how, that'd be great to know!

So people, what would you think of this more sinister colour scheme?
Are there any other suggestions - I am not too keen on the traditional colours :/
Thanks in advance,

Celebor

I THINK the textured look & the digipat camo effect were achieved using self adhesive stencils.

i think he got a big sheet of duct tape paper stick it onto model cut out important lines + edges with an exacto knife
or you could stencil it with a sticker paper stencil

glossy effects can be achieved by washes or glossy paint
that dip stuff also can make it glossy when you go to spray it matt cover up the parts you want to keep glossy

Awesome guys! Thank you so much!
Do you know what these stencils are called?
Also, do you know how they acquired the 3D effect?
Thanks again guys!

All of those effects were achieved with an airbrush. The first two (the carbon fiber and digital camo effects) with stencils and the last (OSL) freehand. Custom masks can be cut with a knife, but fine repeating patterns like that are generally die cut (if made using decitated products - similar, if somewhat less neat, effects can be gotten with fine plastic mesh, like that used for packaging produce). If you attempt your own self-adhesive masking, make sure to use a low-tack adhesive (masking tape, not duct tape or sticker paper - frisket film is even better) or risk pulling up paint when you peel off the stencil.

This video shows how to go about making the digital camo, does not show how to prepare the stensils though.

For the digital camo if you are in the uk take a look at the anarchy models airbrush stencils as seen here http://www.snmstuff.co.uk/anarchy-models-hd-stencils-5-digi-camo-no-2/

I used the mini version for my Tau battlesuits

Hi again!

Thank you so much for your help.
When I get round to applying these methods with my feeble skills, I will let you see what I achieved
