I narrowed down my enevitable Legion to either Alpha Legion or Ultramarines.

But i'm curious, how many people out there have legions and which ones.

seems like a lot of people like Alpha Legion and when I move to the mainland (from hawaii)
I'm not sure I want to pick a Legion that 60% of the players are playing.

You're missing my Legion of choice, the Thousand Sons. Honestly though, depending on where you move, there really aren't that many 30k players out there, so I doubt you're going to find an issue with everyone playing your same army.

I didnt include Thousand Sons or Ultramarines or the ohter legions that dont have rules because they dont have Legion rules yet. I would think youre kinda gimping yourself if you have started a Legion with no special units or rules.

I would love to start on the Ultramarines core units but I have no shoulder pads, or contemptor dred. I hear you though.

Emperor's Children and Mechanicum armies for me. I may eventually work on a Solar Auxiliar force using my Dreamforge Eisenkern.

Well, as far as Thousand Sons go, I ended up free handing all of my chapter symbols and using the existing Thousand Sons upgrade kits, so they look unique while maintaining the Thousand Sons look. For the most part, outside of a chapter-specific shoulder pad, Ultramarines tactical marines are going to use the same models as everyone else. You can easily build and paint all of your non-named characters (Praetors, all of the different Centurions), all of your basic troops, pretty much every tank, etc. The only things you'll be missing out on are the upgrade kits Forgeworld will eventually put out, and maybe a Dreadnought kit. You can certainly do the core units though.

Technically, I have the books and models for a Knight Crusade list.

Perhaps not, but since GW seems to subsist off sadness and pain, I can't rule it out.

I selected none. If GW rumours come true I will start a pre heresy Death Guard for sure.

we are lucky here (mainly due to me haha) to have 10-15 HH players, we also have one guy we call the rainbow warrior as he repaints and plays a different legion nearly every week, its sad as the models are under so many layers of paint now :/

I always liked the WE, that white and blue just suits them so well. Plus pre heresy Kharne is sooooo sick!

Unfortunately my FW purchases must be planned studiously thanks to left arm prices, thus a World Eaters legion is a faraway dream. Sharks first! Then if I have any limbs left, maybe WE....

You're right, I didn't mean to disregard them, but I have no interest in either of those two army's and wanted to get a feel for what chapters are popular at the moment.

I've had a similar idea but if I start an alpha legion army, I may paint tacticals in different legion colors

I run Iron Hands and Mechanicum.

I'm slowly rubbing off on my friends too as one has a Death Guard army and another friend just bought Horus to start a Sons of Horus army.

I mainly run Mechanicum close to 7000 point with those now. I've also got a small Questoris Knights list that I ally to my Mechanicum in big games. Have recently started Solar Auxilia close to 200 points with those and I've got a 2000 point Imperial fist Zone Mortalis force based on the Battle of Phall. I also appear to have a serious resin addiction!
