Hi fellow Dakkanaughts,
I hope you are well.
I have the Khorne Daemonkin on preorder and looking in the long term to enter a tournament.
My question to you good sirs and madames is how does a melee centric army tend to fare on the competitive scene?
|
Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you. |

Oy... As a fellow servant of the blood god I can tell you we aren't having a good time. Atleast with CSM it ends up with my entire army shooting bolt pistols and lascannons at my opponents last remaining unit which is a flier or getting blown to pieces by one tank killing weapon (ex. rapier) in a good position and making my KBs foot slog and be shot at. In objective games we need to place objectives very very well so we can contest them while in CC because if a unit isn't in CC it is in your dead pile.

Depends on what the rules in the dex are vs the points but CC only works if you have the durability and speed to get in and there is dozens of ways to get around it. CC isnt really the greatest in tournaments, Ive had whole games with no CC.
CC, although more powerful than shooting, requires much more to actually achieve and is incredibly short ranged. You expend more points getting into combat than possibly getting. Hence why CC armies have always fallen before properly constructed and efficiency weighed shooting armies. The application of both is usually what wins games faster, as in going into CC with the knowledge of victory being guaranteed.
Looking the way the book is going to turn out you'll need lots of champions around to get the free characters and lots of shooting/durability to score those blood points. Sadly I don't see it being the greatest dex, but there are still lots of unknown factors.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

IDC if the new book is so so it literally can't be worse (that isn't saying anything) than what we have right now with what it is looking like. I just want to make sure it has enough fluffy and fun elements so I can make campaigns off of it! Also, the blood tokens thing I hope will come with the ability to upgrade champs further via wargear because each model having a story and winning epic battles is really fun!

Last time I brought Chaos to a tournament I made it to the final table against my brothers Tau funnily enough.
Not so funnily enough I was tabled in three turns without killing a single model. In hindsight inviting him to come up for that tournament turned out to be a bad idea.

If the new book can pull off a list like;
HQ
Axe of 'I die = Bloodthirster' Jugger Lord
Karanak
Elites[/I]
4-5 'Crushers w/full command + Axe of Khorne + Banner of Blood
3 Termiecides w/Combi-Melta
3 Termiecidex w/Combi-Melta
[b]Troops
10x Cultists
10x Cultists
10x Cultists
10x Cultists
10x Cultists
Fast
4-5 Chaos Spawn
12-16 Flesh Hounds
12-16 Flesh Hounds
Heavy
Forgefiend
'Grinder w/Baleful Torrent
'Grinder w/Baleful Torrent
You've got the Axe Lord w/Spawn, Scouting Bloodcrushers & Hounds for bum rushing and getting into combat by Turn 2. Plenty of cheap throwaway units for helping to gain Blood Points or whatever they're called between the MSU Cultists & Termiecides.
Soul Grinders are the best walkers in the game, while the Forgefiend can be used to Hull Point transports to death. (could even swap out a Grinder for a second Fiend)
If you can still include the 4-for-1 Heralds deal, then you can cut down a few Hounds, and/or remove the 'Crusher unit entirely and go for a pair of Jugger Heralds w/Axe of Khorne + Hatred Locus to lead the Hounds.
Best bet is almost certainly to play the army as an MSU force in order to help reap more benefits from the Blood Tally thingy.

Karanak isn't available to the daemonkin codex apparently, and word is no 4-for-1 deal on heralds either.
HQ
Axe of 'I die = Bloodthirster' Jugger Lord
Karanak
You'd be looking at at least 180 for the lord (probably more, getting a free BT won't be cheap), another 130 for Herald/jugger/axe to replace karanak, so ~310
Elites
4-5 'Crushers w/full command + Axe of Khorne + Banner of Blood
3 Termiecides w/Combi-Melta
3 Termiecidex w/Combi-Melta
That's 472 (IIRC) assuming you can still get the banner of blood
Troops
10x Cultists
10x Cultists
10x Cultists
10x Cultists
10x Cultists
350 for blood point fodder
Fast
4-5 Chaos Spawn
12-16 Flesh Hounds
12-16 Flesh Hounds
512 for the minimum amount you've listed
Heavy
Forgefiend
'Grinder w/Baleful Torrent
'Grinder w/Baleful Torrent
495 IIRC
That's 2139 points (roughly, dependant on how the lord works out) if I can remember my points costs. I don't like your chances.
