I've decided to take the plunge into 30k. I just bought the first two books at Adepticon but haven't had a chance to dive into them yet. I do have a number of 30k units that I was going to use either directly or repurposed into 40k units for my Mantis Warriors... but now I think they'll all go back to reclaiming their originally intended purpose.

I'm not asking you to build me a list or anything like that... I don't even know what Legion I'm going to play yet. I was hoping though, that if I listed what I had available... I could get some feedback as to if they could be part of a viable list of some sort. I'm not an uber-competitive person by nature... so anything that isn't absolute crap is probably good enough. If it's cool looking and not completely unusable... I'm a pretty happy guy.

Here's what I've got...

Sicaran
Storm Eagle
about 10 tartaros pattern terminators
7-10 outrider bikes
Contemptor
2x Hyperios launchers

I guess I'm asking... for those of you who currently play 30k... if I can build a list around these units or if some of them aren't really viable.

Yes, you can make a legal army out of it and one that isn't bad. It might not be great but it won't be bad.

If you take the Pride of the Legion Rite of War then you can make terminators troop choices. You split the terminators into 2 groups of 5, put one in the storm eagle and the other on the ground. Terminators cannot deep strike in 30K unless you take a different Rite of War or certain special characters. Then I'd probably split the bikes up in groups of 3 and have them run around the board. All the bikes have to have the same weapons so they become very expensive in big groups if you give them all TL-plasma guns. You now have a very mobile army to go after your opponent.

Keep in mind that which legion you pick will play a part too as it gives you access to different special units, upgrades, and legion specific rules. I play Iron Hands so I'm limited in the number of bikes, jet bikes, and jump pack units I can take for example.

Got it. Thanks shamroll. I'll need to do some reading on the Legions before I pick. Will also get some feedback from our local 30k players to see what Legions aren't being built by other people already. Didn't think I'd be lucky enough to actually have a playable force.

All you seem to lack is an HQ choice, but beyond that you got a decent Pride of the Legion list, indeed.

Given that I don't quite know what I'm doing yet... are there any units I should put in my mind to possibly add later? Something that's kind of universally useful?

The Whirlwind that tosses 1, or when stationary 1+1d3, Str4 AP3 Blasts kicks my ass every time.

Before you go out and buy a lot of gak, sit down and think of what Legion you want to play. The legions will have a big impact on how the list plays.

My Imperial Fists shoot bolters at BS5 and my Heavy Support Squads have tank hunters. So, tactical squads and HSS are excellent for me.

OH, and I just remembered that I do have a comtemptor dread (I think it's venerable) and two Hyperios whirlwind launchers.

Man... I have far more 30k stuff than I'd realized.

Yeah, a surprisingly large amount of 40k stuff can be re-purposed for 30k since most stuff that exists in 40k first saw production in 30k.

Like other folks mentioned what legion you end up choosing will play a significant role in what you'll want. You have a pretty good start though. One of the things I love about the crusade army list is the variety in of how you can build an army with it.
