In my 40k ork speed freaks army I like to field lots of trukks filled with boyz to overwhelm my opponents. Unfortunately the trukk models cost a lot of money that I really do not have and they all end up looking very similar. Does anyone have any advise what can be used to obtain a cheap, usable trukk?

Still waiting for Godot.

Literally anything can be a trukk.

Cheap, crappily built rhino on ebay for 10$? Perfect to make a trukk. Random jeep / half track / w/e model in 1/35 scale that's about 10$? Perfect to be a trukk.

Your local toy store is probably your best option to find a basic truck-style chassis of around the right size. Add a plasticard body (a covered cab is great if you don't have any spare driver figures) and some leftover bits from actual trukk kits to roughly match the look of a standard trukk (remembering that even the GW trukk represents a looted vehicle).

So long as the resulting vehicle is close to the standard trukk dimensions, and looks like a fast open-topped lightly-armoured passenger vehicle that can carry a unit of orks, you should be fine.

I dunno what kind of stores you have but we have what are called Dollar Tree stores here. They have these monster trucks that are way too small for 40k but wheels, axles, & suspension are perfect.

Here's a buggy I made for necromunda using one & junk:

It's small for a trukk but it's a start. Also here's a truck made using the wheels, cardboard, & random bits:

Just food for thought. The wheels are the tricky part. Once you have them the rest is easy.

Wow, those are brilliant.

Thank you for the inspiration. I am going to try and find some place that sells cheap army toys and convert them.

Still waiting for Godot.

Check out the robogear line of toys/models. You can find them on ebay pretty cheaply. Google will point you to a number of orky conversions using robogear vehicles.

As others have said, it's can be just a matter of taking toy trucks and orkifying them so they look less 20th century. The easiset way to do this is by adding armor plates.

This article here:

was written mostly with post-apoc in mind, but it shows how to do cheap armor plating from blister plastic and a 1/8 hole punch.

Lastly, the biggest give-away that a toy is not 40k is often the wheels. If they're too realistic it's a dead giveaway of a modern car.
I recommend either finding a truck like the ones pictured above that have really crude wheels and then shaving off the writing.

Alternatively the cheap car-board books that are often available for a buck are a good source of nice chunky non-realistic wheels that look plenty orky.
