So, thread title is my big omission.
Everyone else seems to have played them all, to great excess, and know them inside out. Partially because the games were released during a time when my only real involvement with GW was through BL books and partially because as a console gamer I've always avoided RTS games because I hate trying to control them with pads, I've never so much as completed a preliminary tutorial.
So, what are everyone else's tales of stuff that one really should have done as a 40K gamer, but never managed to achieve? Never bought a Space Marine box? Never managed to completely finish painting a squad? Never actually played a game? Does the iconography of even the most famous faction leave you scratching your head?
Now is the time to make your confession!

I have never read a rule book properly since 3rd edition Imperial Guard Codex. I have owned every edition of main rules since, every Guard Codex since, codex harlequins and Eldar. Yet I cant bring myself to read them. So my confession is, I cant stand the fluff GW writes, but I love some of the ideas in the setting. Its those ideas combined with the freedom of modeling that keep me interested in 40k. I do look at the rules that are relevant to me mostly, but im pretty bad at reading the rules too.

I never collected Orks or Dark Eldar. I never played DoW 2. I only got to the starship boarding in Fire Warrior. I never actually fielded a SM battle company in a game despite playing the points and having the models available to do so. I rarely play games anymore - I go to tournaments for the guaranteed games (I hate going to a game night to discover I'm the only one there), but I don't have the right models to be competitive in a tournament setting.

I too have never played (or even seen played) DoW; not only was it released before I got into 40k, but I also don't play PC games. If they released an Xbox One/360 version, I'd certainly buy that, but I just don't 'get' PC games (terrible with keyboard controls, and I won't buy a PC controller when I already own 2 Xboxes).
It took me several years of playing various SM armies before I even got a basic Tactical Squad set, not because I didn't run Tacticals but because I got most of them through starters/battleforces/megaforces. I only went and bought an actual Tactical box when the new one came out.
For years, I never based anything. I had an epiphany on that about last November, though, so now I'm slowly working through my backlog. Similarly, for years I never primed anything, but now I sort-of do (I just use black acryllic, works well enough and gives a nicer finish than actual primer)

Never played Dawn of War, stopped reading the codex fluff and Rulebook fluff after 3rd Edition, HATE the 'custom fluff' some players will try to tell me during a game. Hate the Horus Heresy even more. Having more enjoyment reading the old Necromunda books than anything else recently written.
Oh, and haven't bought a legal codex since I came back to 40k. But, will buy the Imperial Armor 8 and 9 when they're redone. Till then it's a pirate's life for me.

I've hated every single GW game (DOW, DOW2, space marine, video games i mean) with a passion. They feel like cheap knockoffs of clearly superior games. Space marine? Go play Gears. DOW? Starcraft. DOW2? That game was just bad by itself.
I heard there are good ones out there but i've never played them xD

If you think Dawn of War is like Starcraft, you clearly need to play more real time strategy games.
The only thing Space Marine has that's like GoW is the perspective.

I really don't like reading many of the Black Library books. Their view of the universe tends to clash with mine. And if I had thought the universe was like it is shown in those books, I never would have started playing.
Funny that others say they hate the fluff and don't want to read about it in the codices, because without the fluff I probably wouldn't even play this game!

I've never played any of the Dawn of War games.
I have only been in a GW store once in my lifetimes.
I have never actually completed a model. As in paint->Base->Decal->Clear coat. I usually get the paintjob done and put off the decal/basing.

I found that the fluff was cool on the surface. But once you dig any deeper I found most of it to be rubbish. But I only dug deeper after I started. Which is a pity, but I dont mind some of the ideas and bits here and there. The problem is its hard to unremember what I have learned of the universe since.

DoW2 was easily better than DoW1. Easier to enhance with mods, too.

I played DoW2 for about half an hour before deciding I don't like it. I still play DoW1 from time to time, mostly single player though, I just find it entertaining to build up a giant IG or Ork force.
Ways I've failed as a 40k gamer? Hmmm, well I haven't read a single 40k rulebook or codex cover to cover since 2nd edition.

You can use xbox 360 (and I assume Xbone) controllers on PC, in fact that's the default controller for a LOT of games, I'd go as far as to say it's probably the most common controller for PC. But you don't want to play an RTS with a controller anyway.

The only 40K book I've owned was the 5th(?) Dark Eldar codex.
I've never played 40K properly, only one or two games with my friends models.
I always think I have a good understanding of the 40K background, till someone tells me "Dude, Khorne ain't bout martial pride. He jus bout blood. As long he get blood he don care". And then I weep a little.
I want to like the game and the universe, but at the same time there's something in me saying "Nah, man. It's too lame. Go buy some cigarettes instead. Smoking's way cool"
I do have a few models, but I just can't get them painted.
Oh, and I've never played any Dawn of War game either.
So, it appears I couldn't even be considered a 40K player. Couldn't care either way honestly

I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work with my computer, seeing as it's a) an Apple and b) really rather old/slow.
I don't mind RTS with controllers to be honest, the ones I do play on XB ( LotR: Battle for Middle Earth, Halo Wars and Warhammer: Battle March) are all simple enough.
